My Credit Card Dispute Story

Post by vapspwi » Nov 26th 2002, 10:49 am

So, I finally got around to disputing my overcharge yesterday. (I was overcharged on July 25th, and for some reason thought I was already over 120 days, so I wasn't in any hurry to dispute. I just continued to try to get my money out of Another Universe.)

Well, once I stopped and did the math, I realized that the 120 days ended like last Tuesday. D'oh! But I called the Wachovia service line, and talked to a lady there. She wouldn't do anything for me, since it was more than 120 days. So I asked to speak to her supervisor. She said he'd tell me the same thing, but I said I'd give it a shot.

He explained the 120 day thing (it's a Visa thing) to me, and listened while I explained the extenuating, fraudulent circumstances surrounding the situation. He said that they would still try to do the chargeback, and if that didn't work, there was some other measure they could try. He asked me to send him some written documentation.

So I sent him a 3 page letter with my name, card number, signature, and the history of my dealings with Another Universe, and what I was buying, had received, and was still waiting on. I sent him an additional page with some links to stories about the situation (Jason's interview at the Digital Bits, this Forum, etc.). And I sent him about 12 annotated pages of e-mail traffic about the set, starting with the announcement of the set, and then the credit card system problem announcement, and then all of the "give me my money back" e-mails and AU responses.

He also asked me to send him some details about the number of overcharges and so forth, and Jason's kindly helping me out with that.

I don't know if anything will come of it all, but at least I gave it a good shot. I also filed my Attorney General complaint yesterday, and a Federal Trade Commission complaint last week, in addition to my FBI fraud complaint a few weeks ago.

I would encourage EVERYBODY that's been overcharged or otherwise shafted to do all of this stuff. If the AG and the FTC and the FBI and various banks see dozens or hundreds of complaints about the same company, it lends an additional air of credibility to all the complaints. There's strength in numbers, so GO GET AU!

If ANYBODY needs help proving that they disputed charges through the customer service site, just email me at jasonr@mscl.com.
