I have never been able to get too far into one of his books, they bore me to tears.

Almost nothing happened in American Psycho. It was nothing but unending lists of every brand and description of every article of clothing everybody wore, what they ate, and where, who they saw there, what they thought of who they saw there (which made for boring dialog) what brand of every article of clothing everybody they saw wore.

The way i remember it was pages and pages of tedious lists of articles and brand names with a sprinkle of dialog, and then every few chapters a graphic description of the main doofus killing someone and dismembering them, or whatever.

But in a film where people can take in what a scene looks like in an instant, what's left? And the book had no ending.

And to think he was/is friends with Donna Tartt. You would think it would rub off on him. <sigh>

I saw Reign of Fire...I have to admit that I actually liked it, though that was largely due to my huge-mongous imagination working overtime and improving the storyline as it went along (by the time I got out of the theater, I had this enormous fan fiction all planned out in my head that was basically the whole movie redone to make it good -- not that I have time to even think about actually writing it). [Did I mention I want to be a writer?]

Christian Bale shirtless at the beginning doesn't hurt.

Plus I am notorious amongst my friends (and former co-workers at Blockbuster Video) for liking terrible movies, mostly ones that just didn't live up to their potential or just cheesy teen movies. Well, they say they're terrible -- I don't agree. When I would recommend movies to customers, one guy I worked with used to tell them not to listen to me on account of my terrible taste (he was joking, but it was annoying), though I never once had a customer complain that I gave a bad recommendation.

This girl I knew just LOVED The Cutting Edge and we gave her endless amounts of grief over it, but it didn't bother her in the least. If you like something, you like it - people can be such snobs about music and movies, like if you don't like something they like you are an idiot and if you like something that they don't like you are an idiot. As Jess said in When Harry Met Sally, "It spoke to you."

Candygirl what you say is so true. Take me and my boyfriend for instance, I bought the Once and Again Box Set recently and brought it home to watch. At first my boyfriend made fun of my tastes, but he ended up watching a good bit of the episodes with me. Now I just have to work on him about MSCL. But whatever happens I like what I like and nobody is going to change my mind about.

It's funny you should mention that....I ADORE The Cutting Edge. My cousins and I used to get together for a week or so every Christmas and summer break (when I was about 11 or 12 -- we're all really close to the same age) and each time we seemed to have one movie we would obsess over. Once it was Ernest Scared Stupid (I have a friend who was in it), once it was the Willies (stupid horror movie that scared the CRAP out of us at the time), and once it was The Cutting Edge. We actually watched it 8 times in a row. Not eight consecutive days -- EIGHT TIMES IN A ROW (except for bathroom/food breaks). We had the whole thing memorized by the time we were done. I still have a certain nostalgic connection to it (not to mention I'm a sucker for cheesy romantic comedies).

Tee hee. We won't even get into the silly things I did around the age of 14....

It doesn't hurt that i've always had a crush on Moira Kelly, she is just beautiful.

I remember when i bought the dvd in best buy one night i felt so awkward and weird bringing it to the register lol. Like i was doing something dirty

As for Reign of Fire, I thought the special effects and story idea were cool, but I guess I was expecting a better plot. And yes, shirtless CB wasn't hard on the eyes!

This thread is reminding me of the movie High Fidelity (sorry, haven't read the book) when they are talking about the only thing that matters is what you like and dislike, and that's what tells everything about you. I wasn't trying to impose my tastes on anyone. If I can help people save a little money (like, say, waiting until a less-than-spectacular film is in the cheapo theatres instead of spending $8 opening night), than good. I've seen plenty of okay movies, and they served their purpose - entertained me. I totally agree with everyone else here that you are all entitled to your own opinions. It's great that we can share them here.

I totally know what you mean! Sometimes when I go to the register with my cheesy movies, I feel like I might as well be buying porn the way the cashier gives me such dirty looks.

For those of you who haven't seen or read High Fidelity, this is what we're talking about:

A while back, when Dick and Barry and I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like, Barry proposed the idea of a questionnaire for prospective partners, a two or three page multiple choice document that covered all the music/film/TV/book bases.
