Best cover song EVER
This is embarassing, but here goes....
"Funky Town" - by Psuedo Echo. ![]() I think it was was released around 1985, I would have been 15 at the time and I still love it. I don't know if it was released in the States, or if any of you were old enough to remember it, but, IMHO, it really kicked ass! And still does. "See, I have this philosophy......."
Covers. Hmm. I worked for a band in Madison since I was thirteen. It's a steel drum band, and they did some of the BEST covers I have ever heard! Here's their website for anyone who'd like to hear a sample: http://www.odtapoimi.com
Covers from CDs I have that stick out in my mind at this moment: Aretha Franklin covering Carole King's "Natural Woman" The Stray Cats covering The Supremes' "Can't Hurry Love" Ben Lee (Claire's man!) covering Weezer's "Butterfly" Jimi Hendrix covering Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" Smashing Pumpkins covering (orig. band?) "Girl Named Sandoz" Keb' Mo' covering Robert Johnson's "Come on in my Kitchen" Also being a jazz musician, we play covers a lot, only we call them standards most of the time!
I haven't heard that version, but we did get the 1979 Lipps Inc version of Funkytown. Not so rocking though. ![]()
Pseudo Echo was fairly popular hear in the states at the time, but i dont remember that song either. Oh well. Thats what Kazaa is for ![]()
What/who is Kazaa? Why am I always asking questions????? ![]() I thought of another great cover song yesterday. Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind" - the extended version on their Introspective CD is titled "Always On My Mind/In My house" and it's excellent. "See, I have this philosophy......."
Three songs immediately come to my mind when discussing great covers:
- David Gray's cover of Softcell's "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye." - Frente's cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle." - U2's cover of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love." If I had to pick just one of those three, despite U2 being my favorite band, I'd still pick Frente's "Bizarre Love Triangle." Truth. Beauty. Freedom. And above all things... Love.
Hmm... I have bunch of selections...
I love to crank up Cheap Trick's version of anything by the Beatles, especially "Magical Mystery Tour". Also, being a HUGE Peter Gabriel fan, I have a lot fun listening to a tribute album called "Dream in Red". It's not top shelf, but it's interesting. About five or six years ago, a jazz singer named Madeleine Peyroux came out with one album ("Dreamland") and then dropped off the face of the earth. She did a fantastic versions of "Walkin' After Midnight" and the Edith Piaf standard "Vie en Rose". Oh, Madeleine... where did you go? ![]() Finally, U2 doing "Night and Day"... Croon Bono croon!! -g (Now I have eight songs stuck in my head...)
![]() I LOVE Madeleine Peyroux!! A few months ago I did a google search in hopes that she had done some new material and that I was just out of the loop, alas...mais non. The most recent stuff I found was when she was on tour with Lilith Fair years ago, so she really did drop off the face of the earth. ![]() Darn shame because she was very talented. I hope she's happy wherever she is. Natasha aka candygirl :: MSCL.com
Look, if this is weird for you, being tutored? I don't mind helping you a little longer. You could have sex with me if you really want to help...I guess that's a "no"? Hmmm, covers. Currently I've been listening to the various covers on the bonus disc of Pete Yorn's musicforthemorningafter. Bowie, Smiths, Springsteen.
To check out the stuff that I cover, can see my band's website at http://www.askerin.net Who is onlineUsers browsing this forum: No registered users and 0 guests |
