BaseballBaseballHey all,
I thought I would start a thread about baseball. Share any thoughts you have about any teams you like, memorable games you have been to, etc. On Saturday I went to Reds game. This was my first time to the new Reds stadium, Great American ballpark. They did a great job on the stadium, very nice. The visting Marlins beat the Reds 5-4. Still I got to see Ken Griffey Jr. hit a home run. That was neat. Best, Lance Man Well, since I'm from Baltimore, the only place I've ever seen baseball is at Camden Yards, and the only games I watch are Orioles games. Not that I'm a die-hard fan; I'm actually not a baseball fan at all. But of corse it's like a law around here that you have to follow the Orioles. In fact, I can hear my husband watchig the game in the next room right now.
Meg Ahhh, What are spouses for if not to plant themselves in front of sports game in progress. When you loving inquire as to their fate, the respond, "Uh-huh, can't talk right now honey, game on." ![]() Best, Lance Man I have always loved baseball. It was ingrained into my psyche at a young age. My dad's dad played professional ball around the time of WWII in Philly. He grew up in Philadelphia and has wonderful stories about running into Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Jimmy Dugan (the guy played by Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own) etc., etc. He used to be allowed out in the outfield when they were having batting practice to chase after the balls.
My grandfather used to have a house in Clearwater, FL, and he would stay there during spring training. He got to know all the Phillies. He brought my sister, brother and I home signed baseballs. My brother has a ball signed by the entire team from 1993, when they went to the World Series. My brother also has a signed picture of Ted Williams, among other treasures. I had a huge crush on Darren Daulton at the time (the catcher). My grandfather got me a signed ball from him, which read, "To Megan, All my best, #10 Darren Daulton". I was in heaven. For 3 seconds of his life, he thought of me when he wrote that! ![]() There is nothing better than sitting in a ballpark on a warm summer night, drinking a beer and eating a hotdog, watching a game. Growing up in the summer, I used to fall asleep to the sounds of the Philly announcers that were on TV when my grandfather and dad were watching the games. I still get that relaxed, happy feeling when I hear their voices. Especially Whitey. ![]() I love baseball. I love everything about it. The smell, the sounds... Thanks for the great post, Lance. It brought up a lot of good memories for me. "I have all these dreams where I know exactly what to say. And you tell me, you know, that you forgive me."
baseballMegs,
You're more than welcome. ![]() Best, Lance Man I love baseball! Don't get to see much of it over here (channel 5 used to show it at like 1.20am but I only watched it when I was up late doing revision for exams...)
This summer when we are over in Chicago my cousin is going to get us tickets for a Cubs game - I'm so excited... I went once a long time ago and I've got a signed Sandberg card as a lovely souvenir. it was such a cool day. ![]() --------------------------------------------- http://www.urban-hills.blogspot.com ---------------------------------------------
One thing I love about Cubs fans is that they are sooooo loyal. The team knows that they can play like absolute crap and their fans will still love them. The last time I went back to Chicago to visit my relatives, there was some commercial on tv from the ball club. The basic gist of it was, "We know we suck this year, but come see us anyway." Gotta love that!

Look, if this is weird for you, being tutored? I don't mind helping you a little longer. You could have sex with me if you really want to help...I guess that's a "no"? Absolutely love that! ![]() The Cubs seem to do well in the spring and then by June its almost like, "Wait we are doing too well. Can't have that." The Reds usually self destruct later in the season, although they are in a slump right now. Best, Lance Man
Yeah I hope they manage to win tommorrow night. Funny thing, on the way back from Vegas Saturday night, one of the passengers asked the flight attendant for an update on the score of the game. So the captain gets on, "We are just passing over Pueblo, Colorado, Cubs and Marlins are tied 2-2." So the lights are out and some people are trying to sleep and then the Captain is on again, "We are passing over the Mississippi River, Marlins are ahead 3-2." A bit later, "We are just 30 minutes outside of our destination, Indianapolis, and we will be landing soon. Cubs have won, we will get a final score as soon as we get to the gate." The plane erupts in cheers. ![]() I love flying Southwest. By the way its offical: Cincinnati is the most expensive place to fly out of in the United States, see Cincinnati Enquirer Saturday 10/11/2003. Man, I hate Delta. LanceMan
Southwest has some great flight attendants. I remember one Christmas when I was flying home, the crew all had on Santa hats and those tacky Christmas tree ornament earrings and the cabin was decorated with garland. The best part - they managed to make the boring requisite speech about seat belts, flotation devices, and emergency exits hilarious. The passengers gave them a big round of applause for that.
