Song Lyrics: Your Emotional Favorites

Post by fnordboy » Mar 12th 2003, 6:44 pm

Ok, bad thread title I know.

Inspired by the TATU thread (heh never thought I would type that), share some of your favorite lyrics from songs that mean a lot to you. Hopefully we can turn each other on to some new songs/bands.

The "rules":

Please give us the band's name, the song title and if possible the album the song is from. Also, try to keep the lyrics to a chunk of maximum 5 lines, for size reasons. (don't want the whole song, just a favorite line or two from it.)

Johnny Clegg and Savuka: Dela, from the album Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World: (sorry if its more than 5 lines, had to write the whole verse)

One day I looked up, and there you stood
Like a simple question looking for an answer
Now I am a while listening to some inner call
Swimming blindly to throw myself upon your shores
But what if I don't find you when I have landed
Would you leave me here to die on your shores stranded?
I think I know why the dog howls at the moon. (repeat)

(I'll add my Indigo Girls songs later, but I just had to add this one to start it out.)
"Your imagination, like a child, will explode with unrestrained possibilities for adventure."

David Gray, "Shine," from his 1992 debut A Century Ends. It's the first song off his first album, and a helluva way to start a career.

For all that we struggle, for all we pretend
It don't come down to nothing except love in the end
And ours is a road that is strewn with goodbyes
And as it unfolds, as it all unwinds
Remember your soul is the one thing you can't compromise
Step out of the shadow
We're gonna go where we can shine
Truth. Beauty. Freedom. And above all things... Love.

"November"

Post by crimsonglowgurl » Apr 5th 2003, 3:02 am

Song Title: November
Band: Azure Ray

This song is very emo, heres part of it...

So many lifeless empty hands
so many hearts in great demand
and now my sorrow seems so far away
until im taken by these bolts of pain
but i turn them off and tuck them away
till these rainy days that make them stay
and then ill cry so hard to these sad songs
and the words still ring, once here now gone
and they echo through my head everyday
and i dont think theyll ever go away
just like thinking of your childhood home
but we cant go back were on our own

heh..i kinda forgot about this thread I started and never contributed to. So i will now.

There may be errors because it is 4am and I am too lazy to double check stuff.

Boy's Life - Without Doubt
"My whole life's work is wrapped in this one kiss"
I don't know what it is about this song, but that line always gets to me, I think it has a lot to do with the way it is sung, extemely emotional. From their self-titled album

Superchunk - Detroit Has a Skyline
"I had a crush
Nothing works out
Well I had faith
Could not have known; don't even say it"

The first two lines just say it all. I don't think this needs to be explained. From the album Here's Where the Strings Come In.

Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself
"Does he walk around all day at school with his feet inside your shoes? Looking down every few steps to pretend he walks with you. Does he know that place below your neck that is your favorite to be touched and does he cry through broken sentences like I love you far too much?"
Seriously, I would have loved to put this whole song down, but I am trying not to break my own rules. Bright Eyes is one of the best artists out there now. He has been getting his much deserved praise the last few years, but not nearly enough IMO. Everyone should own this album, definitely one of my top 10 of all time. From the album Fevers and Mirrors.

Rainer Maria - Tinfoil
"god damn it,
i'm not talking about my heart
like it's a tinfoil valentine."

and

"your chest is a cage for my letters,
and your handwriting's better than mine. "

One of my favorite songs of all time. Unfortunately this bands latest album just plain sucks but everything before this latest album and the ep before it are just amazing. From the album Past Worn Searching.
sample: http://www.rainermaria.com/Lyrics/PastW ... tm#tinfoil

I have many more, but I am too tired to go on.

Well, mine aren't as cool as the others, but I don't care.

Bruce Springsteen, Dancing in the Dark, the entire song, but I'll pick a few lines:
Message keeps getting clearer
radio's on and I'm moving 'round the place
I check my look in the mirror
I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face
Man I ain't getting nowhere
I'm just living in a dump like this
There's something happening somewhere
baby I just know that there is

Jewel, Morning Song, Pieces of You:
Let the phone ring.
Let's go back to sleep.
Let the world spin outside our door,
You're the only one that I wanna see.

Stevie Nicks and Don Henley, Leather and Lace:
Is love so fragile...
and the heart so hollow
Shatter with words...
impossible to follow
You're saying I'm fragile...I try not to be
I search only...for something I can't see
I have my own life...and I am stronger
Than you know

and:

You in the moonlight
With your sleepy eyes
Could you ever love a man like me

Jim Croce, I'll Have to Say I Love You In a Song:
Yeah, I know it's kind of strange
But every time I'm near you
I just run out of things to say
I know you'd understand
'Cause every time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song

I'll try to think of more later. I apologize for going over the 5 line maximum.
"I have all these dreams where I know exactly what to say. And you tell me, you know, that you forgive me."

I wonder if musical lyrics can count.

From Evita (the movie), You Must Love Me, Madonna:

Why are you at my side?
How can I be any use to you now?
Give me a chance and I'll let you see how
Nothing has changed

From Evita (the play), Another Suitcase in Another Hall, various artists, including Madonna:

I don't expect my love affairs to last for long
Never fool myself that my dreams will come true
Being used to trouble I anticipate it
But all the same I hate it, wouldn't you?
So what happens now?

From Les Miserables, On My Own (some Dawson's Creek fans will recognize this, as Joey sang this song at the Beauty Contest):

On my own,
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him 'til morning
Without him , I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close my eyes and he has found me

I love this whole song, but I will stuck to the rule of 5 lines.
"I have all these dreams where I know exactly what to say. And you tell me, you know, that you forgive me."

I just love how I can kill a topic. I don't think I add too much to this community. :?

Anyway...

Cat Stevens, Wild World, Tea for the Tillerman:

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grievin'

Head Over Feet, Alanis Morissette:

You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience
You're the best listener that I've ever met
You're my best friend
Best friend with benefits
What took me so long

To Make You Feel My Love, Garth Brooks (written by Bob Dylan), Hope Floats Soundtrack:

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet
And I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
There's no doubt in my mind where you belong

I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
There ain't nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on a rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothin' like me yet

There ain't nothin' that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
Make you happy make your dreams come true
To make you feel my love

Yeah. I broke the rules on the last one (on practically every one, actually). I love that song.
"I have all these dreams where I know exactly what to say. And you tell me, you know, that you forgive me."

The first verse of "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" by the Counting Crows, ablum: This Desert Life

Well I woke up in mid afternoon cause that's when it all hurts the most
I dream I never know anyone at the party and I'm always the host
If dreams are like movies then memories are films about ghosts
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast
Well I am an idiot walking a tightrope of fortune and fame
I am an acrobat swinging trapezes through circles of flame
If you've never stared off into the distance then your life is a shame
And though I'll never forget your face sometimes I can't remember my name

-I think this is a moment of awakening from our busy day to day lives.

"Beauty of Grey" by Live, album: Mental Jewelry

This is not a black and white world
To be alive
I say the colors must swirl
And I believe
That maybe today
We will all get to appreciate
The beauty of gray

-Reminds me to look at things from all points of view, before I make any judgements.

"Burn one Down" by Ben Harper, album: Fight for your mind

My choice is what I choose to do,
And if I'm causing no harm, it shouldn't bother you.
Your choice is who you choose to be,
And if you're causin' no harm, then you're alright with me.

-In a word, Tolerance.
"To come to your senses, you must first go out of your mind." - Alan Watts

Here's a few off the top of my head:

"Take the Time" by Dream Theater
Life is no more assuring than love
There are no answers from voices above
You're fighting the weight of the world
and no one can you save you this time
Close your eyes
You can find all you need in your mind
if you take the time

"Ashes of American Flags" by Wilco
All my lies are always wishes
I know I would die
if I could come back new

"Reservations" by Wilco
How can I convince you it's me I don't like
Not be so indifferent to the look in your eyes
when I've always been distant and I've always told lies for love
I know this isn't what you were wanting me to say
How can I get closer and be further away
from the truth that proves it's beautiful to lie

"There Was a Little Boy" by Toy Matinee
How can you expect a child to understand the sickness of a world whose eyes are blind?
A world he cannot hope to conquer, insecurities that fester in his mind
No choice, no fault, and no way out
No blame, no guilt, no friends, no cure, no crime
The dying man inside this little boy is questioning his once upon a time

"Fighter" by Kaytee Bodle
I'm a lover, I'm a fighter
Heart muscle like a sentimental boxer
I sting like a bee when I love you honey
I float like the butterflies in my belly
I'm a kicker, I'm a biter
You'll never see me give up gracefully
- Jim

Megs, I have looked at this thread a bunch of times and it's going to take me a while to pick out my favorites. I guess I'm sort of thinking more about those breakup songs threads right now. I will get to this I promise! I really want to.
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

The Smiths, There is a Light That Never Goes Out, dunno the album

And if a double-decker bus,
Crashes into us,
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

U2 All I Want is You, Rattle and Hum

You say you'll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbour in the tempest
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
"My sons a homosexual and I love him. I love my dead, gay son"

I'll try to follow the rules.

Fleetwood Mac, "The Chain," Rumours

And if
You don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain

Fleetwood Mac, "Book of Love," Mirage

In silence the lonely make all their mistakes
Tore a page from my heart
Someone in heaven above
Show me how to love
Tore a page from my heart
TomSpeed

Patty: If Rayanne's not seeing you, and we're not seeing you, who is seeing you?
Graham: And how much of you?
Angela: Dad!
Graham: Oh, I'm sorry! I asked a question about your life, didn't I? Woah, what came over me?
