Double billing - an idea just occurred to me.

Post by zero » Nov 28th 2002, 8:01 pm

I'm sitting here retyping the petition trying to get all the events straight in my head - and this just occurred to me, so I thought I'd post it in case it's been mentioned before and I missed it.

Some people were billed for the full amount mid-march without being asked - and then at the end of march an "authorisation" email went out asking people if it was ok.

Could it be that the people who were double billed were those who were charged the full amount before the email went out, and then charged again when they said yes to the mail?

Perhaps I'm just trying in vain to make sense of something that wont make sense?

You are trying in vain. The permission email didn't say "can we keep charging you forever?" People continued to be double billed until August.

An interesting conversation with Mike McCullough back when the email went out though. Asked him if it was because authorizations were showing as charges and he said "No, our accounting department basically just decided to start charging everybody and didn't tell us about it. We could only sit back and watch the train wreck."

I know that it doesn't add much to your theory, but that was his feeling at the time. In any case, it indicates that it was intentional. It's hearsay, so it's not useful for proving anything, though. I wish he'd put it in writing to somebody.

My next theory - the whole thing was a plot by giant flesh eating lizards.

This theory is more likely than the "accidental overcharge theory."

Yeah, this same thing occurred to me recently (and I think I mentioned it here in passing) within the last week or so, when I was reviewing my personal history with Another Universe for my credit card dispute letter. I was charged in full ($99.98) before the letter went out on March 26th or so, and then charged again ($115) on July 25th. I don't know that the facts bear out the hypothesis, but it is something that crossed my mind, as well.

I think I was perhaps just going mad trying to be rational about it. However the charges being made before the letter went out has now been mentioned in the improved petition.

I was only charged 20 USD in March. Then they took 80 USD at two different occasions in August.

So for a company as small as CMIH, is "accounting department" really just slang for "CWCEO"? I'd love to see a financial audit of CMIH, but then again I'm sure CWCEO wouldn't be willing to share info from his personal bank account. Too bad CMIH doesn't do business with the government -- just ask the executive directors of the LA and Pittsburgh film offices what happens when you shift public funds into private bank accounts.
