£18 is for purchases. You're allowed gifts of up to £35
(although in practise, a parcel marked as gift is very rarely

books, childrens clothing and, um, milk products
are all exempt, since you wouldn't pay VAT if you bought
them here. (that's really the point of the customs charge -
to recoup the tax you would have paid if you'd bought
them on the highstreet. In exchange, you aren't charged
sales tax in the country of purchase, so it's not like you're
paying twice. It just makes a "hidden" tax a bit less hidden,
which annoys people cos they like to not realise how much
tax they pay. It's doesn't help matters that it's possible
to not be charged for loads of orders, which naturally
leads you to expect not to be charged, which leads you
to think you have the *right* not to be chargedgodammit.
But it's sort of fair really. All helps fund the health service.)

nicely put i shan't feel too bad if i get a bill for the VAT now thanks i like the bit about the NHS too!
i'll stop whinging now :D
