Check with your credit card companies, because . . .

Post by chnest1 » Oct 30th 2002, 3:01 pm

AU charged me for shipping last week after my cancelling three weeks ago.

I'm not a huge fan of MSCL (have only watched 1/2 an episode when it was on MTV), so I didn't purchase the set early. I did order it in mid-September though, based on my huge love of thirtysomething (and belief that Zwick and Herskovitz wouldn't attach themselves to a less than quality show). I discovered this web site and lurked for a long while, watching the anger level rise when due dates were passed. By October 9th, I'd seen enough here to know that AU had major reliability problems, so I e-mailed Ross to cancel. I immediately got back a very polite reply that it would be no problem.

One week later, October 16th, I checked my credit card for the appropriate credit (they had charged me $115 at the time of the order), but there was none. I called the 1-800 AU number, and spoke to someone who said that Ross had just given him a huge number of cancellations, and that they were being entered into the system. He further said that he would cancel my order right then, and forward it to Accounting. A few days later, I finally registered here to take advantage of the Share the Love program, but still didn't think my situtation was interesting enough to post about.

On October 28th, I called my credit card company to see if the appropriate amount had been credited. Needless to say, it hadn't been. I then told them the particulars of the situation, and they said it would be disputed and my account would be credited by today. Perfect. Today I called in to make sure that had been accomplished, when, much to my surprise, I was informed that, although the $115 had been reversed by Citibank, The ComicStore had charged my $10.95 on October 24th (which I assume was for shipping). That means that (a) I was charged with shipping after I had cancelled 2 weeks earlier to Ross and 1 week earlier to AU directly, and (b) Although Ross said there was free shipping to everyone who ordered before the release date, that AU was going to charge everyone's credit cards anyway.

AU is, without a doubt, the most dishonest company I've ever done business with. To anyone who is on the fence of cancellation (other than those who are worried they will never get there money back b/c the charge was so long ago), I recommend not hesitating. And to anyone who thinks they've cancelled, I'd keep checking my credit card over the next month to make sure no other suspicious charges show up from The ComicStore. Neil.
