based on stories and characters created by Winnie Holzman
'Twas the night before Christmas
And cheer was about
But the father Vasquez
Had kicked Rickie out
Things hadn't been great
Near the end of that year,
But I figured Christmas
Was nothing to fear.
But I didn't know
What had happened to Rickie;
Rayanne filled me in,
Things got sorta sticky.
Then later at school,
As I thought o'er it all,
I saw a strange girl
In a room down the hall.
She played a guitar,
So pleasing to hear,
Singing a song
As I came more near.
I thought, as we talked,
That she's just like me
But when I told Patty
She didn't agree.
My mother got mad
When I asked to invite
The girl, and poor Rickie
To dinner that night
When mom told me no
I got, like, upset,
And then did a thing
I would later regret
I ran to the warehouse
Where I'd seen them before
But the cops caught me there
As I walked in the door.
My mother was shocked,
And confused, and irate
And thought in her head
That she'd acted too late
She set out in snow,
With her heart in a whirl,
But stumbling about
she came on the girl.
"I froze," the girl said,
And mom realized
the girl *was* like me.
Then tears filled her eyes.
The angel gone, Mother
Went into the church.
She found Rickie, then me:
Her heart gave a lurch.
My father appeared,
With sister in tow,
And Brian; all three
They came in from the snow
We sat in the church,
The first time in a while
We'd been there; together
We started to smile.
And Sharon and Raynie
took phone calls all night.
Even Jordan shared Christmas,
With his candle-light.
And just then I realized:
We needed no tree,
No cards, and no shopping:
The best presents are free.
So I send a greeting
That I hope all will hear:
Merry Christmas to all,
And a Happy New Year!
