The AV Club.com weekly episode by episode commentary

Post by saintsandpoetsmaybe » Jul 28th 2008, 9:09 am

The website theavclub.com has been running a very interesting weekly blog commentary on each episode of My So-Called Life. The last post was July 21st and was about episode 6, The Substitue. The blog can be read here: http://www.avclub.com/content/tvclub/sh ... led%2BLife

Thank you for posting this link. The blog is excellent.
It's well written, with an interesting perspective.
Oh, and I love your user name! Interesting that you selected
that phrase from the entire series. It almost sounds like
it could be a fanfiction title. I
thought my fanfic title--"Between Names"
was clever, but this one's better... :D

Thanks, I have been lurking around here for a while meaning to join so I have had a long time to think about my username. :)
I've just re-read the blog. There are some little things I don't like about the writing - like the occasional swipe at the show for being 'cheesy' and how hindsight and age has made the writer realise this. However, for the most part it is really interesting and reveals some things I haven't noticed before. In my opinion, one of the most insightful observations is:

"At the end of the “Red” scene, Angela and Jordan are silhouetted in the darkened rehearsal space in a way that echoes the way Angela and Brian were on the street in the first episode. Except, of course, Jordan is in Angela’s position, and Angela is in Brian’s position now."

It's subtle aspects like that which make me realise how much depth the show had, and how it could never be described as cheesy. I can't wait to read the posts on the other 12 episodes in the coming weeks for more observations like this.

That is true. There are many details like the parallel scenes between Brian/Angela and Jordan/Angela that we would probably never notice, but all the same we feel the affects of the directors decisions! I agree. MSCL is rarely cheesy! Yeah, your user name just reminded me of how much I liked Abyssinia's character--though she only showed up very briefly. I wonder if she would've been around more in a second season?

Have a great day!
