Northern Exposure S1 coming to DVD!

Northern Exposure S1 coming to DVD!

Coming May 25th.

Very cool news, I have been waiting for this for awhile:

Universal Home Video announced the DVD release of the debut season this morning, on a 2-disc (double-sided "DVD-14") set running at 384 minutes. List price is $59.98 for this set, which comes in a special limited-edition "Parka" packaging that is sure to be a collectible item. 4x3 video and English Dolby Surround Sound represent the original over-the-air presentation of this show, and on the DVD you also get French and Spanish subtitles to choose from. The discs are closed captioned for the hearing impaired, too.

With such a short season, Universal didn't want to disappoint the fans with too short a DVD release, so they are adding some nice bonus material to this box set. Look for these extras:

Deleted Scenes
Video Documentary Footage
Mock Movie Footage
"Unexposed" Footage

This is good news - Northern Exposure is one of my all-time faves.

But...

The first two seasons only contain a total of 15 episodes. Why not release seasons one and two together in one four-disc set? That list price seems awfully steep for only eight episodes. Or are we paying extra for that limited-edition "Parka" packaging? Who comes up with these ideas, anyway?

I am hoping the list price will change before it is released. I really don't know why they are going for such a high MSRP. Unfortunately this might hurt the release in the long run. If not enough people buy S1 (which is questionable with that price) they might not continue the series like so many other great series before it :(

Yup, they should ditch the parka idea and lower the price. I'm still probably going to buy it though. Its been so long since I've even watched reruns of the show.

Maybe if we wait six months, they'll issue it without the "Limited Edition" packaging for a more reasonable price.

That parka seems pretty lame to me. I can't imagine how I'd fit this bright orange padded dvd case on the shelf with the rest of them. I guess you have to be a true fan to appreciate it.

It will probably fit perfectly next to the Evil Dead Book of the Dead edition release....hopefully it won't smell as bad though.

There's a lot of die-hard NE fans out there (myself included) who'd pay dearly for those dvds, but one does hope the retailers will see reason and cut that pricetag down to size.
