It's being advertised on TV now! Huh, maybe I'll finally have to replace our old tape of the trilogy recorded from Showtime back in like, '83 or something. Considering that my sister and I used to watch the movies like every weekend when we were kids, it's amazing the tape syill plays. (Although, there is this weird static, with the voice from another chanel thing during the evacuation of Cloud City.

A&E will be airing Star Wars: Empire of Dreams on Sunday at 12pm. This is a two hour documentary about the Star Wars trilogy with behind the scenes footage and cast/crew interviews. It is one of the special features on the new DVD, but if you aren't planning to buy it (or don't plan to buy it immediately in the hopes that Santa will put it under your Christmas tree), set your VCR! A&E has already shown it a few times, and it's really good.

[spoiler]Is it true that the new dvds have some images of the original cast overlayed with newbies from the prequels? I saw a screencap of Hayden Christenson as Anakin's ghost at the end of RotJ, but it might've been photoshopped...[/spoiler]

That would truly be the most sacreligious thing to date in regards to destroying Star Wars. I have made my peace with the fact that George Lucas now sucks (I wanted to write something a lot stronger, but I figured it best to restrain myself), and that the prequels are bad. They are, just, bad. And I was already traumatized when they re-released the originals with all of those digital additions and extra scenes with Jabba, but this! THIS would be taking things way too far. Now it's getting personal. [spoiler]I feel like Graham in "Other People's Mother's": Do what you want with the pequels, they mean nothing to me; but these are the originals, you do not put Hayden Christenson in the originals.[/spoiler]

I'm not a huge star wars fan or anything, *gasp*, I know.... but I always thought it funny when I told people I hadn't seen either prequel. they act all shocked as if I wasn't worthy to be an american or something. yet all I ever heard was bad things about the prequels. I'm not one to see a movie just so I can join in on the bashing.

I wanted to cry when I saw Episode I in the theaters. I was so disappointed; not disappointed The Hours style, not even JP Lost World style, but really, truly disappointed in George Lucas as a person style. I left the theater thinking, "where did the integrity go?" But yes, I did come back for Episode II, despite the pathetic scripts, the sensationalized special effects, and the inane, mind-numbingly poor acting, because, you hope to catch a glimpse of what you loved so dearly in the originals. The only redeeming point, for me, is Natalie Portman, which is hardly enough as it's painful watching her work with bad scripts and worse co-stars, i.e. Hayden. I'm never shocked when somebody has passed up the suffering that is these movies; I am, perhaps, slightly shocked that I still plan on seeing the third one -- foolishly hoping there will be a sudden return of wry humor, purposeful action sequences, Jim Henson, integrity, and an overall spirit and center to the films. I am excited that the originals are finally making it to DVD, and somewhere, out in some production studio, may the Force be with Episode III, and help it to not completely suck.

Yup, me too. I loved the original trilogy so I saw Episode I and did not like it. I couldn't work myself up to see Episode II, so I waited until it was on DVD. I realize it might have been more impressive on the big screen, but I couldn't stomach my boyfriend and me paying $10 each just to get in, plus the price of parking after my dislike of the first movie. Thank goodness I didn't waste my money because I didn't like Episode II either. We actually had a debate regarding which movie was worse. They are both awful in their own special ways

but ultimately I felt Episode II was worse. At least Ep I had more action sequences and special effects to distract me from the plot and acting. It also didn't have Hayden Christensen, which was a big plus. I heard so many great things about his performance in Life as a House, so I was expecting him to do a decent job as Anakin, at the very least, but it was the most boring love story I have ever witnessed. I know in the Empire of Dreams documentary, the actors from the original trilogy said "people don't really talk like this" (regarding the original trilogy scripts), but in those movies I felt like it was stylized sci fi kind of dialogue whereas in the prequels, I just felt embarrassed for the actors having to say these sentences outloud. I'm a completist so I'll probably see Ep III, but you can bet your ass I won't be lining up in costume so I can be one of the first to see it.

I'm in the minority of fans who have enjoyed the prequels thus far, but I'm still hoping for a big improvement in Episode III. Like Sam Jackson taking out Jar-Jar and the emperor teaching Anikin the ways of the dark side along with some acting pointers.

I gave up after Episode I. The originals were fantastic, fabulous pieces of saturday afternoon post christmas dinner sofa vegetation fodder, and I've seen them who knows how many times. Episode I left me totally cold.

And I shall now tell you something that will stun you rigid. Well, maybe not. But:
Mr. S has never seen a single Star Wars film. That's how much he hates sci-fi. Clearly when (if) we have kids I will have to uphold the beacon of true cultural viewing for my children, lest they be sucked into the pit of being unable to suspend their disbelief, even for a fleeting moment....... *sob* it could all go so horribly wrong.

HEY! MY Hubby is actually IN the original star wars...

well he's in the addded footage of the "A NEW HOPE" he's one of the thugs entering the Cantina in Mose Islesy <Sp?>
I have a pic somewhere let me see if I can find it. Needless to say we will be buying the dvd.

Ahhh, yes. I remember when Star Wars used to be on one of those basic cable channels (TBS?) all the time, especially over holiday weekends. Very nice to lie on the sofa and sleep off the food while Luke learns his life lessons.

When we went to see Episode I, a friend of mine confessed that she had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy. I asked how that was possible since I knew for a fact that she grew up in a normal neighborhood (not a cave). She said it wasn't a conscious choice where she refused to see them, just that she never got around to seeing any of them. To that I said, HUH?

Yes, it is your responsibility to make sure that your future kidlets are exposed to important things like Star Wars since your husband could lead them astray.

Paul is on the left side there, the other THUG in the pic is Steve "Spaz" Williams. They were both working for ILM at the time, and casting need a couple of Big rough looking gys sooo.... there ya go

Actually it;s weird because Paul has had this young guy track him down for an autograph ROFLMAO!!!! the young man had cancer, and to take his mind off the treatment he began searching out Unnamed cahracters from star wars... weird world eh?

OH just edited to say apparently the costumes were from the original filming and really smelled bad!!! AH life in film it's so damn glamerous!

Well, you could always do a GIS for "sci-fi porn". A few nekkid robot chickadees might change his mind...
