I agree in many ways with you both. I always thought of him as being a rude, deadbeat, drunk guy who doesn't care too much for the inconvenience that Amber has a child,Rayanne, and that her daughter's friends might come over and get in the way. He probably just thought of Rayanne as being in the way...

I have no idea about the weird statistics you mentioned. I don't know if you read the other book she wrote, but I skimmed through it and it wasn't that great. I of course was semi-interested because it involved my addiction of MSCL, but really it didn't do a lot for me. Don't waste your time on that...
