August 25, 1994 was five years ago today.
Five years ago today, if you were lucky enough to be watching ABC at 8:00 p.m./7:00 p.m. Central, and if you connected with what you saw, your life changed forever. Oh, you may not have realized at the time that it had changed, or only grasped later to wh
at extent it had changed. But it did. If not your life, then at the very least your concept of what television could be, with what depth and understanding a television series, a mere work of entertainment, a commodity, could speak to your emotions, could
portray life, could make you think, could make you feel.
Five years ago today, you may have been vaguely familiar with a growing consensus among people whose job it is to write about television that a show called MY SO-CALLED LIFE was the best, most ambitious new series of the fall season. You may have sat down
to watch it with skepticism, certain that nothing could possibly be that good, could possibly live up to such praise.
Five years ago today, you discovered that every once in a while, the critics are right.
Five years ago today, you may have been aware that those glowing reviews focused largely on an actress, completely unknown to you, named Claire Danes, and that this 15-year old was being touted as not just a potential new TV star but a legitimately great
actress. Sure. At 15? How good could she possibly be?
Five years ago today, you found out.
Five years ago today, Angela Chase, Patty Chase, Graham Chase, Danielle Chase, Rayanne Graff, Rickie Vasquez, Brian Krakow, Sharon Chirsky, and Jordan Catalano did not exist. Five years ago today, you were introduced to all of them, and eventually, even t
hough they still, technically, did not exist, being fictional characters, you felt as if they were people you'd known forever, perhaps even feeling you knew them as well as or better than many of the actual people in your life, thanks to evocative writing
and especially to subtle, brilliantly detailed, intuitive performances by what may very well be the finest ensemble cast in the history of television.
Five years ago today you never dreamed that five years later, you'd still be talking and thinking and maybe even writing about a TV show, and that you could in fact meet people and form friendships with them through shared reactions to that show.
MY SO-CALLED LIFE premiered five years ago today.
We've had a time.

The episode that night was Life Of Brian, the best episode they ever made, the one that was voted one of the top 100 television episod
es of all time in TV Guide. I immediately became hooked. I then watched most of the episodes after that one, but when I got the message that the show was going to be cancelled, I was crushed. I wrote a letter to send to ABC telling them how pissed I wa
s, but never sent it. The night of the final episode, I forgot to tape it, and never saw it, until the show was put on MTV a year or so later. I then tried to tape all of the episodes, but never got all of them. Then, miraculously, the box set is relea
sed!! I bought the first set of tapes that have been released, and I'm so happy. The characters are real, the show is real, everything the characters say and do are things that have happened to me and things that go through my head constantly. "My So-C

know that now. Sadly, this show could never be recreated, and at the risk of sounding overdramatic, we are all suffering in small ways because of it. These incredible actors have all moved on and I unfortunately have to face the fact that Angela, Rayan
