"So-Called" Lifer Rebounds

May 23, 1995

Devon Odessa dealt with disappointment in her "So-Called-Life," so she's prepared to confront it in real life too.

Odessa has little time to mope over the cancellation of "My So Called Life," the ABC television series that received critical acclaim but was cancelled because of poor ratings.

The 21-year-old West Virginia native is preparing for a starring role in "Shoot the Moon," a short film about an older woman looking back on her youth. Odessa will play the woman during her teen-age years.

On "My So Called Life," Odessa played Sharon Cherski, a high school sophomore and longtime best friend of the show's main character, Angela Chase. Odessa's character dealt with a range of emotions, including jealousy, heartbreak and anxiety about the size of her chest.

"Right now I really want to concentrate on movies," Odessa said after the show was cancelled. "It's difficult after working on such a wonderful show, but I'll keep on plugging."

“Do we have to keep talking about religion? It's Christmas.”
