Calendars

Post by Nostradamus » Jan 2nd 2005, 9:50 pm

What did you have for 2004, and what adorns your wall/desk/toilet stall/forehead in 2005?

Last year I went with Falling Waters, which featured photography of, well, waterfalls! This year it's Backroads & Byways, a beautiful collection of pastoral scenery from the Audubon Society.

I actually didn't have a calendar last year. I find that calendars really don't mesh well with my haphazard way of living. I make a lot of lists (and then typically lose them), but never plan things on calendars. In college I trained myself to use them, and actually had a pretty comprehensive, color coded system, but even then it was only midterms, paper deadlines, office hour appointments and finals. I actually always had two calendars in college, one regular wall-sized one hung near my desk, the other one of those mini calendars that I would keep in my black plastic file folder that held of my course syllabi and handouts for the given quarter. Now that I'm out of school though, I've pretty much given up the pretense of being organized in my personal life. I wouldn't be fooling anybody. That said, I absolutely love calendars. I go for black and white photography, sometimes Robert Doisneau, once London after spending the summer there, once sailboats after I took up sailing again, sometimes portraits. No lighthouses, castles, celebrities, cutsie animals, little kids kissing, or naked girls on cars. My mini school calendars were either Dick and Jane, or whatever was on sale and not totally repulsive. Despite my inability to effectively use them, calendars have always intrigued me. It is a philosophy of mine that the calendars people buy say a lot about them.

Also, after multiple V. Mars reiterations, and finally a Deadwood movie, still wishing for some continuation of The Riches !

This is actually from a couple of years ago but I still think it's worth mentioning. My sister bought me a "Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul" day planner. It was an insane purchase as I was annoyed by the bombardment of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" merchandise and I an not a pet owner. However I was impressed with some of the random quotes about animals. I redecorated it to remove any visible sign of what it once was but I still never used it except for the phone list section. I'd like to think that it was a joke gift but I don't think my sister is funny in that way.

Somewhere there is a nice leather day planner with my initials on it, and a PDA I used for 6 months. Our secretary buys callenders for everyone, this year I recieved Hall of Fame Hockey Players, she knows me well. Last year was a callender of black and white photographs by a photagrapher who combined images to make them seem sureal and intereseting. Trees floating in air above lakes, and stuff like that. This year I'm not buying one for home, my dad gets free wildlife ones through his company so that will due just fine.

My new calandar should be delivered today! It is a Robert Doisneau, black and white photography from the 1930s 40s and 50s. For the past few years Ive done the black and white photography ones - of sailbots from the 40s and 50s, of New York in that same time period and so on. I guess its becoming a trend for me :) But I love having a new calandar every year to hang on the wall. I think I just use it for the pictures now that I think about it....

Last year we had only anime calendars from Japan up. IIRC we had Getbackers, Nana (manga not anime), and Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu. We wanted the Stellvia one but it sold out too quickly. So far we only picked up Brian Froud's Pressed Fairy calendar.

Last year we had a wildlife calendar. This year we don't have one yet but we do need one, so we will get something in the sales. I'm thinking about architecture... black and white photos of london, paris, new york...something along those lines. Usually someone gets us one for christmas, but we drew a blank this year.

Weirdly, we don't actually write anything on our calendar; it's more of a kind of picture thing, and to remind us what day of the week it is etc.

Haha! Me neither. I hate that stuff. Especially that Ann Geddies photography - YUCk. My old roommates had stuff like that. Anyway, in 2003 I had a calendar of Japanese Woodblock Prints, 2004 was impressionist paintings, and this year I have a Vinage beverage posters calendar. I'm really into the art thing, because it's a good, cheap way to mix up the art you have in your home. A lot of times I cut out the pages of old calendars and put them up in my apartment or use them in some other way to decorate a sketchbook or whatever.

When I was little I would always get calendars from my gramma that I hated, like the baby cats and stuff. When I was in middle school I had Simpsons calendars mostly, and in HS I started getting into the art calendars. I had a smithsonian museum calendar that was super cool.
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

that's your friend? Woah.

Can I just join the Hate Geddes club? Who wants to see that much schmuck on one piece of paper, let alone 12 pieces of glossy paper joined together with staples? Bleugh. I'll never understand the popularity...
