I remember a discussion with a career advisor that told us that we would have, on average, 5 different careers before retirement. Perhaps it's time for you to move on to the next one. I'm currently working on my first one keeping in mind that it will give me the flexibiliy to write my ticket where ever I want to go and then I can move toward my next career. In otherwords I'm just creating a stable plan B, so I can risk more on plan A, whatever that turns out to be.

I can't remember the last time I consistantly got a good night's sleep, it's been a few months, maybe years. Life's only getting busier with coaching and rec. league games I don't antisipate a good sleep schedule in the near future.

Billy Pilgrim - Insomniac

I can see you and I don't even know you
falling into the sheets at night
Place my hand flat on my chest
Feel the heartbeat back the night
I've tried counting sheep and I've talked with the shepherd
Played with my pillow forever and ever
I sit alone and I watch the clock
I breathe in on the tick and out on the tock

I can hear your bare feet on the kietchen floor
and I don't have to have these dreams no more
I've found someone who can pull me tight
and hold the insomniac all night

Dig my head down deep so I can't hear the cars
outside on the street and the stars are laughing
They get a kick out of my misery

I've tried everything short of Aristotle
to Dramamine and the whiskey in the bottle
I pray for the day when my ship comes in
when I can sleep the sleep of the just again

Chorus

Hold the insomniac all night
Hold me
I can keep on dreaming
Hold me

Chorus

I can't sleep

I love that song NM.

I've never had insomnia (well not the kind of prolonged insomnia you guys are talking about - obviously I've had sleepless nights occasionally) so I have no idea how it feels but a good friend of mine suffers really badly from it. It definitely seems more widespread than I previously realised.

The night terrors thing though, I've definitely had that - when I've woken in the middle of the night but am in the kind of groggy stages. Usually it's a person in my room, just standing, staring at me and I'm so scared I literally can't move. Eventually I've come out of it by forcing myself to think rationally. it is a pile of clothes heaped up. It is not a man with a beard. It takes a few minutes but once I realise, I'm OK. It's horrible, and thankfully I've only had a couple since me and Mr. S moved in together.

Interesting thread going.

Night Terrors I have been fortunate enough to avoid. Plenty, plenty of nightmares though. Normally insomnia is not a problem but occasional sleepless nights do occur.

The big thing I have heard with occassional insomina is that one shouldn't try and just toss and turn in bed if you truly can't get to sleep. Get up watch tv, read a book, get on the computer, do something and then when you start feeling tired go back to bed.

Heh, just so Tom doesn't call the white-coats on us, I found a little site with basic info on sleep terrors:

Tonight I shouldn't have too much trouble sleeping. Got Mscl queued in the DVD player, a mixed drink or three and a late dinner. The only thing semi bugging me is that a guy I work with might think I like him more than as a friend. He stumbled onto my website and now knows a tad more about me than I wished. Bugger it all, I want to unwind tonight.

As I write this, it's 6:29AM. I've watered my plants outside, polished off the remainder of a mechilada, and felt incredibly antsy over work. More toward the guy thing, actually. It sort of represents a loss of control, and that is sooo not a good thing. I wish I'd taken my Ambien. @_@

My boyfriend had valerian pills and they were still really stinky. As soon as he took the top off of the bottle - whew!

Background noise definitely helps. One of my friends could not sleep without his fan on, even in the winter. I had a tape of Pachelbel's Canon in D looped over and over and over. Whenever I couldn't sleep in college, that seemed to help.

Look, if this is weird for you, being tutored? I don't mind helping you a little longer.
You could have sex with me if you really want to help...I guess that's a "no"?

Can't sleep for anything tonight. Thank the Gods I have a late shift tomorrow afternoon. I don't know what's keeping me up. Rearranging (sp?) furniture and fixtures has helped to smooth out some of the energy in my flat, but there's something more. Haven't blogged in what feels like months. I've ideas, words, sentences. When I sit to pour them out they are a garbled mess. The office has stressed me greatly, and proven to be one of my greatest joys. Gran weakens, and the shard of that reality drives ever deeper into my heart. Next to Mom, I don't love anyone that much in the whole of the world. She want's me to give her eulogy. Oh, the relatives will love that. How do I find the strength in me to let go for her own good when the time comes. Who will I be without her? I can hear the neighbours out on the landing having a bit of a smoke. It's well after 4:30am. Pills didn't do the trick tonight. Time to pop Days Of Being Wild into the DVD player and lose myself to the rhythm of the film.

I have major sleeping problems too.

Sometimes I listen to meditation tapes... some of these tapes are pretty amazing if you can't turn off your brain.

I hate it when I can't sleep. That's been happening to me more often this semester... I think it's because I'm overloaded with too many classes. Just way too stressed out. When I'm up really late, I try to compose. Sometimes I can really get a lot done, and sometimes I just sit there staring. There is an herbal supplement that my mother gave me called Melatonin, and that works for me sometimes too.
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

What they used to tell us back in med school was the following:

- Try to keep on the same schedule daily in terms of when you head off to bed and wake up

- Try to get some exercise and eat a regular diet

- No caffeine at dinner/before bedtime

- Don't spend much time in your bedroom as it should technically be viewed as where you sleep... the more time you're in your bedroom during the day the harder it may be when trying to get to sleep... LoL, only use the bed for sleep and sex. No TV in bed (although I'm definitely guilty of this).

- Lastly, definitely no daytime NAPS... no no no!

OK but porn on TV in the bedroom is ok right! :P

sorry I just couldn't resist.
