ooh, I love the long shaggy hair. it's my weakness with guys. *sigh* he looks better than he has in a long while. and I think wicked was right about Jared needing money or exposure. they complain when they're being labeled a teen heartthrob. but they always come back once people stop noticing.... ;)

I have no idea why, but I somehow find this expression quite offensive... I'm not in the closet of prim or anything, but it just sounds so vulgar.

It's a pretty common saying here, not explicitly sexual, just a way of indicating your interest/willingness to partake of/get with a person, like you would tap a beer.
Sometimes I write a little MSCL fanfiction: https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1039807/Jody-Barsch
Also, after multiple V. Mars reiterations, and finally a Deadwood movie, still wishing for some continuation of The Riches !

Exactly, it's not sexual, you just tap it and it releases a torrent of...

...uh, I'll stop there, but use your imagination.

My understanding of the phrase was always an implied "ass" at the end, as in "tap that ass," which definitely has sexual connotations. According to the urban dictionary:
2. tap

Having sex with a woman.

1. If I could just tap that ass once...
2. I tapped that ass and it was great.
4. tap

tap ass (also tap that ass, tap some ass, and similar):
1. To have sexual intercourse. The implication of anal intercourse is present but slight.
2. To work well or quickly.

1. Have you seen Cindy, that new lady in HR? Boy, I'd like to tap that ass!
2. We're still in the game--we've just gotta get out there and tap some serious ass.
7. tap

TAP
T=T***
A=Ass
P=P****
Sorry to get so explicit (children, look away!), but using these definitions, it's no wonder that starbug found it vulgar!

Look, if this is weird for you, being tutored? I don't mind helping you a little longer.
You could have sex with me if you really want to help...I guess that's a "no"?

That's what I thought the implications were - no wonder my subconscious 'vulgarity' chip sprung into motion... I'm not really up on US Urban Language but it seems to me it's kind of an outrageous phrase. :oops: Although at the same time, I'm 100% sure there are WAY worse expressions out there.
No offence taken, Cworky, at all... just that I read your post and thought 'eugh'. Which is my problem really.

I had no idea it was a common phrase at all! the transatlantic divide strikes again.

Oh yes, there are, but I find it interesting that this particular phrase has been co-opted and trickled down to a level where young kids are using it without really meaning it. I really doubt all the high school kids literally mean they want to have sex with all the people they say are tappable. Then again, I don't know - maybe they do! I think that the younger connotation of this phrase just means "this person is hot," without the overtly sexual overtones that older people literally mean by it.

It's definitely a common phrase if you listen to rap - it has been used by Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, and Ice Cube, just to name a few. One of the characters also used the phrase in the Elisha Cuthbert movie The Girl Next Door. If you aren't listening to rap or seeing those kinds of movies, then it's not surprising you aren't too familiar with it.
