Ani Difranco - Dilate from Dilate:
and you are so lame
you always disappoint me
it's kinda like our running joke
but it's really not funny
i just want you to live up to
the image of you i create
i see you and i'm so unsatisfied
i see you and i dilate

Ben Harper - Roses From My Friends from The Will To Live:
this may be the last time i see you
forgive me for holding you close
this may be the last time i see you
so of this moment i shall make the most
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

I love that album too, and I do have it with me :P. King of Carrot Flowers was the first Neutral Milk song that stuck in my head made me go out and buy the albums.

An emotional favorite for me is
Baby Can I Hold You by Tracy Chapman.

One of my fav's is Dave Matthews Band - Dancing Nancies. It's a song about wondering who you are and how you came to be that way. This was one of my favorite songs in high school when I was often wondering who I was, and why. It's tough for me to pick only a few lines, almost all of them mean something. The best version is from live at Red Rocks and it contains the following intro:

Don't you ever wonder,
Maybe if things had been slightly different
You could be somebody else
Don't you wonder, maybe...
If you took a left turn instead of taking a right, You could be somebody different
Don't you ever wonder... Could I have been...?
Don't you ever wonder, anyone, anyone?
Don't you ever wonder, "Well, God, could I have been...?"
Don't you ever wonder, anyone, anyone?

My favorite verse:

I am who I am who I am, well, who am I?
Requesting some enlightenment...
Could I have been anyone other than me?
"To come to your senses, you must first go out of your mind." - Alan Watts

Yeah, "Two-Headed Boy Part One" was the first song of theirs that I loved, too. "The King of Carrot Flowers Part One" doesn't hold a candle to the song "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," or "Naomi," or really a lot of the rest of their songs, but it has the easiest lyrical clump to distill into a forum such as this one.

I actually bought the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea without hearing it first; I just took a friend's recommendation. Man, that was one of the best surprises ever.

Yes, it was p.I don't know why I forgot to add that.

Did you hear Jeff Magnum's acoustic record Live at Jittery Joes"? What did you think of it?

Of course I heard it. I'm OCD as hell and have to own everything with Mangum's name on it.

I think it's great. I love the extra little bit he tacks on to the end of "A Baby for Pree," and "Gardenhead," the aforementioned "Two-Headed By Part One," and "Naomi" all sound particularly good.

I have to admit that the first couple of times I heard it I was annoyed at the baby that keeps screaming, and when I watched the video on my computer (which is a really cool feature, by the way), I got mad that it kept wandering in front of the camera, but the more I listen to the CD now, the more endearing it is.

There are a couple of complete NMH concerts and Mangum solo concerts that can be downloaded from the web, and this CD sounds infinitely better than any of those (although some of the other, downloadable shows have really good rarities like "Rubby Bulbs," "Oh Sister," or "Little Birds" that are lacking from Live at Jittery Joe's; have you heard any of those?).

By the way, have you heard that Orange Twin (the label that LAJJ is on) is supposedly releasing a compilation of NMH rarities by the end of 2004? There has been rumors about it for years now, but Orange Twin recently announced it officially on its website, so it looks like it might just happen this time.

At first I was turned off by the CD, but the more I listened to it the better it got. I actually should pull it out again since it has been awhile since I have given it a spin.

I actually have never DLed any of the NMH shows, you know of any good sites/channels to find them on?

I heard about the Orange Twin release awhile back, but I don't think it was confirmed then, so this is good news. Hopefully we will get it soon. I was actually at the site not too long ago looking at the NMH tees they have, I might actually order one for someone's xmas gift this year.

Yeah, there's one or two on http://www.knerd.com/~sashwap, and they're the best ones I've heard. That's also where I got the "Rubby Bulbs" lyrics I listed above. They're the most comprehensive NMH site I've seen; way better than http://www.neutralmilkhotel.net.

Well I have been cleaning and going through stuff and came across an old Billy Bragg CD of mine, I forgot how brilliant he is as a songwriter and performer. A few songs really hit me on the album Back to Basics, but for now I will share one:

The Saturday Boy
I'll never forget the first day I met her
That September morning was clear and fresh
The way she spoke and laughed at my jokes
And the way she rubbed herself
Against the edge of my desk
She became a magic mystery to me
And we'd sit together in double
History twice a week
And some days we'd walk the same way home
And it's surprising how quick
A little rain can clear the streets
We dreamed of her and compared our dreams
But that was all that I ever tasted
She lied to me with her body you see
I lied to myself 'bout the chances I'd wasted

The times we were close
Were far and few between
In the darkness at the dances in the school canteen
Did she close her eyes like I did
As we held each other tight
And la la la la la la la la means I love you

She danced with me and I still hold that memory
Soft and sweet
And I stare up at her window
As I walk down her street
But I never made the first team,
I just made the first team laugh
And she never came to the phone
She was always in the bath
I had to look in the dictionary
To find out the meaning of unrequited
While she was giving herself for free
At a party to which I was never invited

I never understood my failings then
And I hide my humble hopes now
Thinking back she made us want her
A girl not old enough to shave her legs

Sky Fits Heaven, Madonna - from Ray of Light

Travelling down this road, watching the signs as I go
I think I'll follow the sun, isn't everyone just
Travelling down their own road, watching the signs as they go
I think I'll follow my heart
It's a very good place to start

Love At First Sight, Kylie Minogue - from Fever

Everything went from wrong to right
And the stars came out and filled up the sky
The music you were playing really blew my mind
It was love, at first sight.

These two lines always make me smile.

Counting Crows - Holiday in Spain

Hop on my choo choo,
I'll be your engine driver in a bunny suit

and...

Someone stole my shoes,
but i've got a couple of bananas and bottle of booz

This is a great song to listen to when you just want to get away from everything. You can see the full lyrics here:http://www.musicsonglyrics.com/C/Counti ... lyrics.htm
And listen to it live here:http://www.annabegins.com/
go to the multimedia section and look under the Hard Candy album.
BTW these are legal concert recordings approved by the band, not ripped of the albums.

winter wonderland

Post by Emeralduk » Feb 22nd 2004, 10:22 am

Cranberries' 'when you're gone':
"but i miss you when you're gone
that is what i do
and its going to carry on
that is what i do"

Jewel's 'what's simple is true':
"the more I live
the more I know
what's simple is true
i love you"

Sarah McLachlan's 'fear':
"but I fear
i have nothing to give
i have so much to loose here in this lonely place
tangled up in your embrace
there's there's nothing I'd like better than to fall
but I fear I have nothing to give"

I feel that with the tracks I've chosen, I find them more emotional because of the way they're sung, beautiful voices full of emotion.

Oh and I totally agree with you Nothingman, about Counting Crows' "Mrs Potter's Lullaby" having a moment of awakening about it. I've always luved that song, it makes me feel really good though, an uplifting track. :Fade-color

Evanescence "missing" (unreleased track)

Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
Maybe someday you'll look up,
And, barely conscious, you'll say to no one:
"Isn't something missing?"

You won't cry for my absence, I know -
You forgot me long ago.
Am I that unimportant...?
Am I so insignificant...?
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?

[CHORUS]
Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me,
I'm all alone.
Isn't someone missing me?

Please, please forgive me,
But I won't be home again.
I know what you do to yourself,
I breathe deep and cry out:
"Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?"

[CHORUS]

And if I bleed, I'll bleed,
Knowing you don't care.
And if I sleep just to dream of you
And wake without you there,
Isn't something missing?
Isn't something...

Even though I'm the sacrifice,
You won't try for me, not now.
Though I'd die to know you love me,
I'm all alone.
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?

those small towns where everyone's friendly and smiles at you for no reason.
I hate that type of town."
