Just a few guesses with quick rants...

Best Picture
* LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

This has to go to the LORD OF THE RINGS. Sorry Sofia Coppola, any other year she would be my #1 for "Lost in Translation", but LOTR just has to get his "best movie" award. It deserves it beyond belief (IMHO).

Achievement in Directing
* Peter Jackson for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

Again, sorry Sofia. :-)

Best Actor in a Leading Role
* Bill Murray in LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features)

Yay for Bill! :-)

Best Supporting Actor
* Ken Watanabe in LAST SAMURAI (Warner Bros.)

Last Samurai = Ed Zwick = MSCL = good. :-)

Best Actress in a Leading Role
* Diane Keaton in SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (Columbia Pictures )

I think she doesn't have an Oscar yet, does she?

Best Supporting Actress
* Renee Zellwegger in COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)

There has to be an award for Cold Mountain somewhere in here...

Best Original Screenplay
* LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features) by Sofia Coppola

No doubt.

Best Adapted Screenplay
* THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson

Yeah, I'm going full speed for LOTR here... :)

Best Animated Feature Film
* FINDING NEMO - Andrew Stanton

Not really difficult.

Achievement in Art Direction
* THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

Achievement in Cinematography
* COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)

Achievement in Costume Design
* THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

Best Film Editing
* THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

Achievement in Makeup
* PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (Buena Vista)

Best Original Score
* THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

The LOTR score really is an amazing piece of work.

Best Visual Effects
* THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

And again...

So how many awards did I give to the LOTR? Eight. Okay, that's enough. ;-)

Best Actress in a Leading Role
* Diane Keaton in SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (Columbia Pictures )

I think she doesn't have an Oscar yet, does she?
She won an Oscar (and a Golden Globe) for Annie Hall in 1978. She was also nominated for Reds and Marvin's Room, but lost to Katharine Hepburn for On Golden Pond (1982) and Frances McDormand in Fargo (1997).

I have a feeling that the Academy will continue its tradition of snubbing science fiction/fantasy/horror films. LOTR:ROK will not win any or maybe just one major award. The only movie to really buck the trend was Silence of the Lambs, which swept the awards in 1991.

I haven't seen too many of this year's movies. I really liked Seabiscuit and Mystic River. I think Mystic River might have a chance to sweep this year.

I'm looking forward to see Lost in Translation when it comes out on DVD. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Damn that 'Best Animated Feature' Category, Finding Nemo should be nominated for Best Picture! Although I agree LotR should win.
But no Nicole Kidman? No Cate Blanchett? I just wanted to see Nicole get one more award to rub in Tom's face...

Being the huge LOTR fan that I am, I mostly satisfied.

I am actually going to be watching this year's show with interest. I am hoping that the Academy will give the Best Picture and Director to ROK. On that score it would have been nice to see Sean Astin and Bernard Hill nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Beyond that I am pretty happy.

I was impressed by Johnny Depps nomination, Oscar usuallly doesn't favor comedies to the same extent as dramas. I think Depps performance was brillant. Also happy for Bill Murray's nomination.

Out of that long list, I've only caught two pics, (PotC & tLS) so I can't say much. Pirates and Samurai deserve at least the nominations, maybe one or two wins.

I'm really torn between three films I want to do well this year...
LOTR ROTK definitely should win the adaptation, makeup, art direction and special effects awards.
LOST IN TRANSLATION should get the other awards it's nominated for...

but I'm torn because they are two such different films. I suppose this was bound to happen but the thing is it makes it really hard for me to be passionate about one over the other.

The only way I think I will be happy is if the Academy gives Peter Jackson a special award for making this magical story such a fim epid.

On a side note, CITY OF GOD is another favourite of mine and I'd like to see it win some awards.

Rant Mode: What on earth is Seabiscuit doing there? If there was ever a more contrived 'let's win an oscar' film, I can't think of it. Unbearably slow in the first third of the film, failing to properly develop characters, and not finishing up with a 'where are they now' segment, this film was bitterly disappointing to me. It was fodder (the more I have thought about this the more it annoys me) and while I could watch it if I really had nothing else I could think of to watch, it definitely doesn't deserve to be on the list. All that real life footage plopped in when they had to slow themselves down a bit.... it just didn't work.

Well I have thought since the first LOTR film that they wouldnt get the big oscar until the third one is out. They deserve something, but I don't know if it should be given to them this year. There are some other brilliant movies in the Best Picture category that probably should get it. Like Mystic River or Lost in Translation. I think LOTR will either win Best Pic or Best Director, well here are my projections and comments:

Best Picture- ROTK, if not then Mystic River
Achievement in Directing - Most likely Lost in Trans. otherwise ROTK
Best Actor in a Leading Role - Bill Murray if not Sean Penn
Best Supporting Actor - If Bill Murray wins Best Actor then Tim Robbins will take this. Otherwise I don't know. I have heard great things about Benicio and ALec Baldwin in their films. I am leaning towards Baldwin believe it or not.
Best Actress in a Leading Role - Charlize Theron, if not possibly Diane Keaton or Keisha Castle-Hughes
Best Supporting Actress - Probably Renee, but I am thinking Holly Hunter might get it.
Best Original Screenplay - Sofia Coppola
Best Adapted Screenplay - Seabiscuit or City of God, would prefer the latter. It is a tough call because I think they need to give an award to each of those films but it is questionable in which category they will.
Best Foreign-Language Film - It is a crap shoot, I have not seen any of these films.
Best Animated Feature Film - Nemo, though I think Triplets of Belleville should get it.
Achievement in Art Direction - Pearl Earring or maybe Samurai. Maybe ROTK depending on how many it gets in the other categories.
Achievement in Cinematography - Cold Mountain probably.
Achievement in Costume Design - M&C or PEarl Earring (of course there is the ROTK factor as above depending on how many wins in other categories)
Best Documentary Feature - Friedmans probably.
Best Film Editing - Dont know.
Achievement in Makeup - Pirates, or ROTK
Best Original Score - Should be A Mighty Wind, but might be Belleville.

eh I will ignore the rest for now ;)

*Rant*
I think it is absolutely ridiculous that they nommed Depp for POTC, not that he wasn't good, but it is only because of earlier snubs. I hate that the Academy always does this, they try to make up for their earlier mistakes by giving the person an award for a lesser performance. By putting him in this year for a fluff movie they have left out other performers who they will eventually add in for lesser work in the upcoming years and allow this cycle to continue.

Same with LOTR, they should have based it on each film in comparison with what is out each year, but more than likely LOTR is going sweep this year (i hope not) just on the basis that it hasn't gotten what it deserves over the last few years. We will have to see.
