California Recall Circus

Post by andrewgd » Sep 15th 2003, 2:02 pm

How's this for interesting:

A federal court has put a stay on the election, because 6 counties have antiquated punchcard voting system that will be replaced in March.

Punchcards that got Bush elected. So I guess they're good enough to elect a president, but not a governor. Hmm. Interesting.

Ya because is so hard to stick the little point through the hole you want! I mean all the way through... No I mean push the little perferated paper out of the otherside... :D

But I guess according to those in the know this is too difficult for minority folks. If I was a black man I would track down the stupid idiot who said that and show him how well I could punch things.

Its funny to me how conservatives say that people can do anything they put their mind to. And liberals say that they can't. And yet somehow the conservatives are the negative ones???

(Just remember Andrew, you wanted me back!!! )

Yeah, I don't agree on placing this on minorities. That just sounds ignorant and dumb.

I do think that the precedent that the ruling of Gore v. Bush, stating something like "everyone has the right to have their vote count, and has as much chance to count the same way everyone elses." With punchballots 5%[/5] would have to be discarded or not read correctly. The court ruled that they couldn't go in and count individual counties differently than other counties in Florida. So that set precedent.

Now, in California, they already have a ruling that the punchcards are outdated, and basically don't work. They were told to replace them by the next statewide election. Which was supposed to be next year, which is why the replacement of the machines was to be done by that date. But wait, now there's this new election, and the machines haven't been replaced.

Sounds like they need to get the machines now, huh?

(Actually, I'm not so sure the Federal court has any jurisdiction over a state election...so the whole point may be mute. :P )

and might I add...WELCOME BACK! Yay! Now I have someone to argue with, instead of just everyone going "Yup yup yup yup" :P

Ya I don't think we have much to discuss on this one though. Seems like the patriot act, something we both agree on.

I agree that as far as this goes its a state matter and the Federal Court should keep out. That's where the 2000 election got fun was with the differences in state election laws verses what the constitution and US Code said about Presidential Electiions.

Graham: And how much of you?
Angela: Dad!
Graham: Oh, I'm sorry! I asked a question about your life, didn't I? Woah, what came over me?
