The Official "Freaks and Geeks" on DVD Thread

MSCL may be gone from the tv screen, but there are lots of good (and bad) new productions airing each week. Talk with other MSCL fans about your favorite shows or the shows you hate. Of course you can also discuss TV show DVD releases here.

I just checked on the site, and 5169 signed up so far. Woo-hoo! :D

When I started this topic, I didn't know there would be this much support.

I sure am looking forward to having Freaks and Geeks next to MSCL up on the shelf.

Thanks to the help from the MSCL team.

I really hope Freaks & Geeks gets released too... I was willing to buy the show on DVD sight unseen, just because I've heard so many good things about it - and heard people compare it to MSCL. Then I managed to see the pilot episode and I loved it! I can't wait to see the rest....please let this petition work!

So I just checked the website and it looks like a little over 10,000 people have signed the petition so far. Anybody have any idea how many they need to get this thing to fly?

WOW

I would hope 10k would be enough, but you never know. Depends on how costly the music really is for it I would guess.

So does anybody know the progress on this project. I checked a couple days ago and they had 19,000 + signatures; is that enough? I sure hope it is enough because I want both Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared on DVD and if Freaks and Geeks comes out I think Undeclared will follow suit.

Judging by the amount of TV Shows coming out on DVD I would say that 19k sigs is enough to warrant it. I think it is a definite, but it will take time especially with the licensing issues and all.

Like Sascha said above MSCL only had 4,700 signatures, and look at how well MSCL did on DVD.

Funny you should say that - I was at the grocery store tonight and while I was in line, I noticed that this week's cover of TV Guide has a feature called "Your Favorite Shows on DVD." Good to know that they have their finger on the pulse of America

I wonder how much of a difference there is in getting Buena Vista or BMG to release a cult series, and Dreamworks. From what I understand, every studio has their own criteria to determine what can be released (read: what is profitable to them).

Still, 19k sigs is a great count for a cult series. I too believe it's a matter of "when", not "if". I just wish this kind of fan outcry can sway all studios in the same manner.

Well the one diff between MSCL and the Freaks and Geeks sets is that we had Jason, an (sorta) inside man, on our side.

Right now if we round that to 20k sigs and they sold the set for 65 bucks that would be 1.3 mil brought in (not including production costs etc.). Not a bad amount to bring in for a cult tv show.

And that made a HUGE difference. MSCL had someone who recognized the potential. Jason was the one who selected it from BMG's properties as a good choice, arranged a distribution deal to sweeten the deal, and helped to carry it through to it's release. He still is.

Of course, we know all of this, but compare the "one man" model with the releases decided by a panel of people, armed with statistics, cost projections, so on and so on.
