Barry's Sad Bastard Music (TM)

Post by Natasha (candygirl) » Apr 17th 2003, 7:37 pm

To counter the sassy breakup songs thread, now share the sappiest relapse-inducing mushy breakup songs - not mere love songs, but rejection/unrequited love songs that make you want to jam forks into your eardrums following a breakup.

Again - Janet Jackson
Don't Speak - No Doubt
Cryin' - Aerosmith

One exception that must be on the list regardless:

I Just Called to Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder (a requisite per High Fidelity  )

Look, if this is weird for you, being tutored? I don't mind helping you a little longer.
You could have sex with me if you really want to help...I guess that's a "no"?

The World Has Turned And Left Me Here - Weezer
How To Survive A Broken Heart - Ben Lee
Anybody Seen My Girl - Keb' Mo'
Don't Try To Explain - Keb' Mo'
Stormy Weather - there are many versions of this, but I like Etta James'
Anything To Say You're Mine - Etta James
Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer - Stevie Wonder
All Miles Davis music*
Lots of Bob Dylan*

(*My most recent lost love was a trumpet playing Davis and Dylan fan. I also can't listen to any The Who. Those were his favorite artists, so that's why that's up there for me.)
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

I've got two; CELINE DION- THINK TWICE (aaagh the worst break-up song ever!!!!!!!!)
AVRIL LAVIGNE- I'M WITH YOU (Even though I hate her I remember hearing the song after I broke up with my boyfriend and it touched me in a little way)

I guess I don’t have a lot of sappy/mushy breakup songs, but I do have a big list of depressing rejection tunes.

Lynard Skynard – Tuesday’s Gone (I recommend, Metallica’s cover of this, but it’s not quite as sad)
Puddle of Mudd – Blurry
Pearl Jam – Black
Pearl Jam – Nothingman (but of course)
Counting Crows – Long December
Soul Asylum – Misery
Stabbing Westward – What do I have to do (there is just so much frustration in this song, it’s great)
Toad the Wet sprocket – All I want
Tom Petty – You don’t know how it feels
Stone Temple Pilots – Creep
Black Crows – Seeing Things

And if you are looking for some real tear jerkers, I recommend:
Ben Harper – “Walk Away”, “Pleasure and Pain”, and “Roses from my friends”
"To come to your senses, you must first go out of your mind." - Alan Watts

What, no Air Supply?

I'm All Out of Love

Making Love (Out of Nothing At All)

Billy Vera and the Beaters - At This Moment

I second Again by Janet Jackson.

Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart. Ugh.
"I have all these dreams where I know exactly what to say. And you tell me, you know, that you forgive me."

Whoa, this brought me way back. I saw Stabbing Westward a long time ago, I think in 1996 when I was in eighth grade. Awesome concert! It turned out that my first guitar was the same model as the lead singer's. Great suggestion, nothingman.

One more for me:
I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick (I can't really tell if this is mushy/sad or happy really. But the bridge has kind of sad lyrics:
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?
Feelin' all alone without a friend you know you feel like dyin'
Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?

I don't know. I like that song anyway.)

And I just thought of this: how about The Cure? The one song that sticks out at me at this moment is "A Night Like This". There's a great cover of this in Smashing Pumpkin's The Aeroplane Flies High b-sides box set.

And how about the Pumpkins? I've listened to Siamese Dream a few times recently and I can't tell if it's kick ass empowering or just sad bastard music. Maybe a little of both, but all I know is that album usually makes me feel a little bit better.

Journey's Greatest Hits is a Sad Bastard album.

"Open Arms"
"Don't Stop Believin'"
"Faithfully"
"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)"

I used to play Journey songs when my relationships ended. One of my roommates in college freaked out. "Dude, she dumped you," he said. "Play some [Angry Bastard] music!"
TomSpeed

Patty: If Rayanne's not seeing you, and we're not seeing you, who is seeing you?
Graham: And how much of you?
Angela: Dad!
Graham: Oh, I'm sorry! I asked a question about your life, didn't I? Woah, what came over me?
