Fall 2003 TV Upfront Presentations

Post by Sascha » May 13th 2003, 12:36 pm

No WB Upfront Presentation without the mention of "My So-Called Life". This time, MSCL-alumni Betsy Thomas creates her first own series:

Run of the House
Image
Sally, Kurt, and Chris are three perfect examples of "The Boomerang Generation," which, as the name implies, refers to kids who grow up, leave home for college, and then come right back to the nest. For their younger sister, 15-year-old Brooke Franklin, the sociological phenomenon is a lifesaver since her parents are always away on vacation. Left to fend for themselves by their globetrotting parents, the four create an unusual surrogate family marked by the usual sibling rivalries and power plays. Somehow they manage to overcome the pettiness, however, in a uniquely genuine attempt to create a nuclear family in the absence of one.

Realistic, funny, and hopeful, this is a family comedy from Tannenbaum Co., with creator Betsy Thomas (My So Called Life), executive producers Rob Sternin & Prudence Fraser (The Nanny), and director David Trainer (That 70's Show) for Warner Bros. Television.

Fearless
Image
"There are four basic human emotions. Joy, anger, grief and fear. They say, of all those, nothing clouds your reason like fear. I've never had that problem." -Gaia Moore

From the executive producer of CSI and Without a Trace, this ensemble crime drama uncovers the FBI's best kept secret: the Y Unit. Society is breeding a new class of young criminals and it will take an elite division staffed with the finest young agents to infiltrate and apprehend them. The Y Unit requires a special kind of operative to succeed - much less survive. Born with a genetic defect, Gaia, 21, lacks the basic instinct her partners Ryan and Harmony must fight to control: fear. Whether Gaia's handicap is an important asset or a deadly liability for the unit remains to be seen...

From writer/executive producer Jeremy Littman (Law & Order, Profiler), writers Vincent Ngo & Evan Charnov and Jeremy Carver with Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Warner Bros. Television.

All about the Andersons
Image
The WB is proud to welcome comedy sensation Anthony Anderson (Barbershop, Me, Myself & Irene, Big Momma's House, Life) in an all new multi-ethnic comedy. Anthony plays a struggling actor and single dad trying to provide a stable environment for his son, Tuga ( 8 ). No sooner has Anthony moved back into his parents' home than he suddenly remembers why he left in the first place. His mother is always understanding and supportive, but his cantankerous father hasn't changed a bit. He tells Anthony to abandon his acting hopes and get a "real job" working with him in the family beauty salon/barbershop. To complicate things, Anthony's old room is being rented out to a medical student - which leaves Anthony alone in the garage. Torn between teaching his son about determination and providing for him, Anthony decides to give up his dreams until Tuga reminds him that besides each other, their dreams are all they have.

A semi-autobiographical comedy about fathers and sons from Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers Adam Glass, Anthony Anderson, and Marco Pennette, with executive producer/director Jamie Widdoes.

Like Family
Image
Holly Robinson Peete and Amy Yasbeck return to The WB in the realistic multi-ethnic comedy Like Family.

When two families - one black, one white - share the same house, they discover that their differences are definitely more than skin deep. Tanya (Peete), Ed and their teen kids are a middle-class African-American family who open their doors for an old friend who is down on her luck. Newly single Maddie (Yasbeck) and her 16 year-old son Keith just need a place to stay until they can get back on their feet. What sounds like a perfect arrangement soon becomes non-stop tension (and laughs) as the two families argue about everything but skin color!

An autobiographical take on family from creator Dan Fogelman with executive producers Rick Wiener & Kenny Schwartz (Mad About You), Warren Littlefield (Do Over) and Warner Bros. Television.

Gilmore Girls Spin Off
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino brings keen insight to the father/son dynamic in her highly anticipated Gilmore Girls Spin-off. A new series starring WB breakout star Milo Ventimiglia as Jess Mariano.

When Jess' estranged father shows up in Stars Hollow, Jess is stunned. Jimmy, who hasn't made an appearance in 17 years, seeks closure with the son he abandoned. But during this awkward visit, Jess' dad half-heartedly opens the door to something more. With the prospect of graduation fading fast and girlfriend Rory Gilmore off at college, there's nothing left in Stars Hollow for Jess. So he decides to head west to Venice, California. This time, Jimmy's caught off-guard, never expecting his son to show up on his doorstep. Father and son never quite click, and so, searching for some sort of connection, Jess falls in with local skaters. Eclectic, artistic, and open minded, these are free spirits not found in rural New England. Finally, Jess may have found somewhere to call home.

A journey beginning in the seaside town of Venice. From writer/executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino for Warner Bros. Television.

Tarzan & Jane
Image
From Laura Ziskin, producer of Spider-Man, comes an epic and contemporary adaptation of one of the most popular tales of all time, with a distinctive WB twist.

Tarzan and Jane reveals a part of the saga that has yet to be told. Flash forward two decades from the day young John Clayton was left for dead in the heart of the jungle. Today, robbed of both his birthright and his adopted home, Tarzan fights for his life in the glass and steel canyons of another jungle - New York City. From his rooftop perch, Tarzan protects the city with the primal morality that proclaimed him king of the jungle.

His only human bond is Jane Porter - a beautiful and dedicated police detective who must battle her conscience as well as the criminal element. Engaged to another member of the force, Jane is torn between love, duty and her powerful attraction to this wild and dangerous vigilante.

A Warner Bros. Television production, in the tradition of Smallville, from writer/co-executive producer Eric Kripke, director/executive producer David Nutter (Smallville, Without A Trace) and executive producers Laura Ziskin (Pretty Woman), David Gerber, P.K. Simonds (Party of Five).

Smallville moving to Wednesday? What about the Wb's "New Tuesday"?

And, "The Gilmore Girls Spin-off"? What? Perfect name for that show.

Ugh.

If it makes you feel any better, the WB feels that Smallville is strong enough to anchor Wednesday nights!

It's supposed to change until January. But the fact that the show still hasn't a name shows that a lot went wrong behind the scenes. They had many casting problems.

"Smallville" could be a perfect lead-in for "Angel", this move could get Angel's ratings up and maybe secure a sixth season.

But that "Tarzan & Jane" concept sounds really weird.

NEW COMEDIES

Coupling
Image
- This provocative new comedy series, based on the British hit of the same name, is a hip look at six thirty-somethings living in Chicago who are either involved, formerly involved or looking to become intimately involved with each other. Susan (Emmy winner Rena Sofer, (“General Hospital,” NBC’s “Just Shoot Me,” “Ed”) is a beautiful and sexy go-getter with an uninhibited attitude who used to date Patrick (Colin Ferguson, “The Opposite of Sex”), the cocky, good-looking guy of the group. Sally (Sonya Walger, “The Mind of the Married Man”) is Susan’s attractive and unspeakably vain best friend and beauty therapist who is desperate for a man and now dates Patrick. Steve (Jay Harrington, “The Division”) wants to date Susan, but can’t seem to shake his clingy ex-girlfriend Jane (Lindsay Price, “Beverly Hills, 90210”) who is completely in love with Steve and refuses to be dumped by him. Jeff (Christopher Moynihan, “The Fighting Fitzgeralds”) is Steve’s “porn buddy,” who, unknown to his friends, is terrified of sex or the prospect of it. He works in the same office as Susan and had a forgettable fling with her. “Coupling” is created by Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue. The show is executive-produced by Phoef Sutton, Ben Silverman, Beryl Vertue, Sue Vertue and Moffat. The pilot episode was written by Moffat, revised by Sutton and was directed by Andrew D. Weyman. “Coupling” is from NBC Studios in association with Reveille and Universal Television.

Happy Family
Image
- Five-time Emmy Award winner John Larroquette (“Night Court,” “The John Larroquette Show”) returns to primetime television when he stars with fellow Emmy winner Christine Baranski (“Cybill”) as would-be empty-nesters whose twenty-something children just can’t seem to get the hang of flying solo in this adult comedy from executive producers Moses Port and David Guarascio (both “Mad About You,” “Just Shoot Me”). Peter and Annie Brennan (Larroquette and Baranski) are anxious to begin celebrating life as a couple again now that their children are all grown up, but it just doesn’t seem to be in the cards. Their youngest (and definitely, not brightest), Tim (Tyler Francavilla, “Boston Public”), should be graduating from junior college, but instead he’s moving in with the “older” woman-next-door -- his mom’s thirty-something tennis partner, Maggie (Susan Gibney, NBC’s “Crossing Jordan”). Their eldest, Todd (Hamish Linklater, “Gideon’s Crossing”), is the apple of his dad’s eye and is engaged to a great girl - and having an affair with yet another great girl. And daughter Sara (Melanie Deanne Moore, NBC’s “Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of ‘Three’s Company’”), the over-achieving family success story, is in the midst of a major emotional meltdown. Pamela Fryman (“Just Shoot Me”) directs the pilot from a script by Port and Guarascio in this production from NBC Studios.

Whoopi
Image
- From the creators and executive producers of “3rd Rock from the Sun” and “That ‘70s Show,” Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost”) stars in this smart and sassy comedy as ex-diva Mavis Rae, a one-hit wonder singer who becomes an opinionated “hotelier” running her own small hotel in New York any way she wants. After 15 years of operating the Lamont Hotel in Manhattan on her charm, wit and a bit of larceny with the help of her reliable Iranian handyman, Nasim (Omid Djalili, “Spy Game,” “The Mummy”), Mavis has big plans to expand her clientele by opening up the Paladium Lounge -- or the hotel bar, so guests can see Grammy-nominee Mavis Rae on a regular basis. Staying at the hotel is her conservative younger brother Courtney (Wren T. Brown, “Biker Boyz,” “Waiting to Exhale”) who couldn’t be more opposite in personality and politics than his liberal-minded sister. When Mavis’ offers free office space as a chance for Courtney to pursue his law practice, Courtney’s close proximity also means a daily dose of meddling in Mavis’ business -- and she in turn provides relentless commentary about his white girlfriend, Rita (Elizabeth Regen, “Leon,” “Free Country the Movie”), who talks like a sister and is just too much fun for Mavis to ignore. Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner (“That ‘70s Show,” “3rd Rock from the Sun, “Saturday Night Live”), Whoopi Goldberg (“Strong Medicine,” “Hollywood Squares”), Tom Werner, Marcy Carsey and Caryn Mandabach (“That ‘70s Show,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Roseanne,” “The Cosby Show”) are the executive producers of this comedy produced by Carsey-Werner-Mandabach and NBC Studios. Terry Hughes (“That ‘70s Show,” “3rd Rock From the Sun”) directs the pilot written by Bonnie Turner & Terry Turner.

NEW DRAMAS

Las Vegas
Image
-- From Gary Scott Thompson -- the writer of “The Fast and the Furious” -- comes this fast-paced, sexy drama, which follows the elite surveillance team charged with maintaining the security of one of “Sin City’s” largest casinos. Oscar and Golden Globe Award nominee James Caan (“The Godfather,” “Misery”) stars as Big Ed Deline, the head of the surveillance team for the Montecito Resort & Casino. With his protégé, Danny McCoy (Josh Duhamel, “All My Children”), an ex-U.S. Marine and Las Vegas native, they deal with card-counting cheaters, costly streaks of random luck and rival casinos stealing their big-money players. If the typical job-related pressures weren’t enough for Big Ed, he recently found Danny in bed with his only daughter (Molly Sims, MTV’s “House of Style”). Rounding out this cast of high rollers are the seductive, high-priced escort Mary Connell (Nikki Cox, “Nikki”), all-knowing valet Mike Cannon (James Lesure, “For Your Love”), pit boss Nessa Holt (Marsha Thomason, “Black Knight”) - a.k.a. the “Ice Queen” -- and elusive former competitor Samantha Jane (Vanessa Marcil, “Beverly Hills, 90210”). Thompson also serves as executive producer along with Scott Steindorff (“The Human Stain”), Justin Falvey (“Undeclared”) and Darryl Frank (“Taken”). Michael Watkins (NBC’s “American Dreams” and “Boomtown”) directs this pilot from NBC Studios and DreamWorks Television.

The Lyon’s Den
Image
-- Rob Lowe (NBC’s “The West Wing”) stars in this Washington D.C.-based drama as Jack Turner, the maverick, idealistic son from a political dynasty who must handle the cases and inner workings of a 150-year-old law firm which may or may not be hiding some dark secrets. Matt Craven (“The Life of David Gale”) plays Riley, Jack’s more practical friend and partner in the small pro-bono clinic of Lyon’s, Lacross and Levine, which will be closed unless Jack accepts an ultimatum to leave the clinic and become managing partner at the firm’s headquarters. The cast also includes Kyle Chandler (“Early Edition”) as competitive and cynical attorney Grant Rashton, Elizabeth Mitchell (“Santa Clause 2”) as Ariel Saxon, an attractive attorney struggling with alcoholism, David Krumholtz (“Big Shot: Confessions of a Campus Bookie”) as Fineman, James Pickens, Jr. (“Traffic”) as Terrance Christianson and Frances Fisher (“Glory Days”) as Brit Hanley. “The Lyon’s Den” is a production of 20th Century Fox and Brillstein-Grey Television. Remi Aubuchon (“24,” “From Earth to the Moon”) is the writer and executive producer; Rob Lowe, Brad Grey (“The Sopranos”) and Bernie Brillstein (“Just Shoot Me”) are executive producers. Rod Holcomb (NBC’s “ER”) serves as director and executive producer.

Miss Match
Image
- Alicia Silverstone (“Love’s Labor Lost,” “Clueless”) stars in this charming drama from Emmy-Award winning executive producer Darren Star (“Sex and the City,” “Melrose Place”) and Jeff Rake (“The Practice”). In addition to being a sharp divorce attorney in her father’s law firm, Kate Fox (Silverstone) has a knack for matchmaking, which she considers a hobby until a socialite bride credits Kate for her romantic success in the press and word of her talent spreads. Soon, to the dismay of her father, Sid (Ryan O’Neal, “Love Story”), and her reluctant legal partner Nick (James Roday, “Rolling Kansas”), Kate is juggling the conflicting worlds of divorce and true love. With her best friend Victoria (Lake Bell, NBC’s “War Stories”) at her side, Kate is determined to bring a little romance into the world, perhaps finding her own true love in the process. Rounding out the cast are David Conrad (“Men of Honor”), as Michael, a potential love interest for Kate, and Jodi Long (“Celebrity”) as nosy office receptionist Claire. “Miss Match” is produced by 20th Television with Imagine Entertainment and Darren Star Productions. Brian Grazer (“24”) and David Nevins (“Double Deception”) also serve as executive producers.

ADDITIONAL SERIES

The Apprentice -- In a bold new reality series that tests competitors’ survival techniques in New York City’s corporate jungle, NBC and executive producer Mark Burnett (“Survivor”) will team up for “The Apprentice,” a 13-episode series in which candidates vie for the chance to become an “apprentice” to a “master”-- and one of them wins the dream job of a lifetime, as they learn from the master and earn a six-figure salary. During the first season of “The Apprentice,” legendary business tycoon Donald Trump will serve as the “master” and his business empire, The Trump Organization, will be the hub of the competition. “The Apprentice” is produced by Mark Burnett Productions. Burnett is executive producer and is represented by Conrad Riggs who will also serve as a producer on the project.

The Tracy Morgan Show - NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” sensation, Tracy Morgan, teams up with executive producers David Israel & Jim O’Doherty (“3rd Rock from the Sun”) and Lorne Michaels (“Saturday Night Live”) to star in his own primetime comedy based on his real life as a hardworking Brooklyn family man pursuing happiness with streetwise wit, attitude and wisdom. Tracy Mitchell (Morgan) and Alicia (Tamala Jones, “Head of State”), his beautiful, no-nonsense wife who’s also a full-time mom, share their modest apartment with their two kids, 13-year-old Derrick (Marc John Jeffries, “Stuart Little 2”) and 9-year-old Jimmy (newcomer Bobb’e J. Thompson). In between Tracy’s big expansion plans for his own auto garage business, there are those other dreams. At work, Tracy is responsible for his other - more dysfunctional - family of mechanics, who include Spoon (John Witherspoon, “The Wayans Bros.”) and Bernard (Heavy D -- a.k.a. Dwight Myers, “The Cider House Rules”) who daily remind Tracy of the headaches of running a business. Israel & O’Doherty are the executive producers and writers of this Carsey-Werner-Mandabach/NBC Studios/SNL Studios and 3 Arts Entertainment production. David Miner (“Greetings from Tucson”), Dave Becky (“The Hughleys”), Marcy Carsey (“That ‘70s Show”), Tom Werner (“Grounded for Life”) and Caryn Mandabach (“The Cosby Show”) also serve as executive producers. Gary Halvorson (NBC’s “Friends,” “Everybody Loves Raymond”) is the director.

Hope & Faith
Image
(half-hour comedy, Fridays at 9:00 p.m., ET) -- Stay-at-home mom, Hope (Faith Ford, "Murphy Brown"), leads a busy, family-centered suburban life with her husband, children and live-in father. Her celebrity sister, Faith (Kelly Ripa, "Live with Regis and Kelly," "All My Children"), has been living the high life in Hollywood as a daytime soap opera diva. But when Faith's character is suddenly killed-off on "The Sacred and the Sinful," she flees Tinseltown and the relentlessly inquiring minds of the tabloid press, and seeks refuge in suburbia with Hope.

In a flash, Hope's sensible, down-to-earth world goes star-struck. Raising three kids ‚including a rebellious teen girl ‚ has never been easy. But with trendy, theatrical Faith at the dinner table, parenting turns into crisis management for Hope.

I'm with Her
Image
(working title -- half-hour comedy, Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m., ET) -- Writer Chris Henchy's real life marriage to Brooke Shields is the inspiration for this fresh romantic comedy: He's an average guy living with a woman who can't even pick up their dry cleaning without being asked for an autograph! Which means he's got plenty of funny stories to bring to this series about a high school teacher who falls for a movie star.

On the day that would change his life, delightful young everyman Patrick Owen is drinking his mid-morning latte when he's bitten by love. Literally. The gnashing jaws belong to Monroe, the easily-excited puppy of movie star Alexandra Young. When she tries to apologize ‚ and when Patrick recognizes her famous face ‚ he's awestruck, dumbstruck, and so very charming.

Alex sets her sights on Patrick, but he's unprepared for the add-ons that come with this little flirtation. His anonymity and privacy go up in the flash of a hundred paparazzi cameras. And he's an overnight sensation with his young male students, for reasons that have nothing to do with his brilliant classroom banter. All of which makes him wonder if it's possible to find true love in the hot spotlight of the media.

From the producers of "Smallville" comes a unique look at a guy dating out of his league. Way out of his league. This comedy proves nice guys don't always finish last. Sometimes they go the distance.

Cast:
* David Sutcliffe: Patrick

It's All Relative
Image
(working title -- half-hour comedy, Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m., ET) -- So you think Romeo and Juliet had family issues? Listen to this.

Bobby's a bartender ‚ the only son of gregarious, salt-of-the-earth Irish Catholic parents from Boston. His fiancée, Liz, is a toney Harvard student and she's Protestant (no, that's not the problem). Liz has two dads, not one, and they're a worldly pair of well-heeled gay men.

The moment Bobby popped the question to Liz, they knew their families would have to meet. And the first time they brought his Mom and Dad together with her Dad and Dad... well, things did not go well.

Aside from the obvious, there's a culture gap between these in-laws-to-be that makes the Grand Canyon look like a seam in the sidewalk. Liz's parents are devotees of the arts. Bobby's are devotees of the Red Sox. Liz's parents are into St. Laurent. Bobby's parents swear by St. Patrick. Did we mention that Bobby's sister, Maddy, loves throwing gasoline on the fire?

From Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, acclaimed producers of the Oscar-winning "Chicago."

Karen Sisco
(one-hour drama, Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m., ET)
Image
-- Smart. Sexy. Tough. Karen Sisco is a United States marshal on Miami's Gold Coast. In pursuit of dangerous fugitives, Karen must pick her way through the dark underbelly of South Beach nightlife and the sunshine and glitz of Palm Beach highlife... while she struggles to win the respect of her supervisor and fellow officers.

Karen is a barely concealed weapon who can take down a suspect twice her size. The only man she truly trusts is her father ‚ a retired marshal with a wealth of life experience and street smarts. He's Karen's confidant, counselor, confessor ‚ and her rock when her confidence waivers... which it does every time she tries to connect romantically with a man.

Based on the character portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in Elmore Leonard's "Out of Sight," "Karen Sisco" is that rare combination of action and character-drama, with a fresh and original young lead.

A coupling remake, come on . I loved the Bristish version and the American version looks like it will be a carbon copy. If I've already watched the British version why would I watch the American version? Exactly, I predict that this will be the first NBC comedy to get axed next season. After all the British Version of Coupling has already started coming out on DVD.

NAVY CIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service)
Image
(Tuesday, 8:00-9:00 PM) stars Mark Harmon ("The West Wing," "Chicago Hope"), Michael Weatherly ("Dark Angel") and David McCallum ("The Man from U.N.C.L.E.") in an action drama, inspired by the hit-series JAG, about a team of special agents whose mission is to investigate any crime that has a shred of evidence connected to Navy and Marine Corps personnel, regardless of rank or position. Leading this team that operates outside of the military chain of command is NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Harmon), a skilled investigator and interrogator who is smart, tough and willing to bend the rules to get the job done. Working under Gibbs is Agent Anthony Dinozzo (Weatherly), a former homicide detective who joined NCIS just a few years ago, but who has instincts that can come only from working on the streets. Joining them is Agent Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), a gifted forensic scientist whose dark wit matches her goth-style hair and clothes, and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (McCallum), a medical examiner. From murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines, these special agents traverse the globe to investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties. Donald P. Bellisario ("JAG," "Magnum, P.I.") is the executive producer for Belisarius Productions, in association with Paramount Network Television.

THE BROTHERHOOD OF POLAND, N.H.
Image
(Wednesday, 10:00-11:00 PM), from Emmy Award-winning producer David E. Kelley ("The Practice," "Chicago Hope"), stars Academy Award-nominee Randy Quaid ("The Last Detail"), Brian Haley ("Pearl Harbor") and John Carroll Lynch ("The Good Girl") in a drama that celebrates small town life and follows three inseparable brothers as they face challenges in their families and careers in the town of Poland, N.H. Hank Shaw (Quaid), the police captain, Garrett Shaw (Lynch), the mayor, and Waylon Shaw (Haley), unemployed, were born and raised in Poland and are former high school hockey stars. Now, as grown men, they are struggling with big city problems. On the job, Hank is known for his explosive personality and tendency to communicate with his fists, while his home life is far from wild with his sexually repressed wife, Dottie (Academy Award-nominee and Emmy Award-winner Mare Winningham). Garrett, the town's pillar of strength, finds his own world beginning to crumble when he's forced to hide a secret from his wife, Helen (Academy Award-nominee and Emmy Award-winner Elizabeth McGovern), that could jeopardize his marriage and his relationship with his daughter, Monica (Megan Henning). Waylon, out of work and feeling a little paranoid, is convinced that his wife, Julie (Ann Cusack, "Stigmata"), is having an affair. He enlists Hank to help, who in turn assigns outspoken police officer Francine Hill (Cleo King, "Boston Public") to spy on Julie's potential suitor. Waylon also learns that his teenage daughter, Katie (Angela Goethals), is sleeping with her high school teacher. As they confront their personal and professional dilemmas, the one constant in their lives is their family bond and their unconditional love for each other. David E. Kelley and Michael Pressman ("Picket Fences," "Chicago Hope") are executive producers for David E. Kelley Productions in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television.

JOAN OF ARCADIA
Image
(Friday, 8:00-9:00 PM) stars Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna ("Glengarry Glen Ross," "The Last Don"), Academy Award-winner Mary Steenburgen ("Melvin and Howard," "Living with the Dead") and Amber Tamblyn ("The Ring") in a drama that follows a typical family facing atypical situations -- not the least of which is their teenage daughter's sudden, unexpected conversations with God. A tough but soft-hearted police chief, Will Girardi (Mantegna) is new to the city of Arcadia and dreams of providing a safe haven for his family and community. An outbreak of serious crime in his idyllic new town challenges Girardi's desire for order, as do the ups-and-downs he faces with his family. Daughter Joan (Tamblyn), an average teenager, has begun acting a little strange. No one knows that it probably has something to do with the unusual way various people keep popping up, introducing themselves as God, and then giving her specific directions to do things -- like get a job. The appearances are hard for her to believe, even more so as she never knows who's going to turn up next. One minute it's a cute boy her own age, the next it's the lunch lady. For now, she's keeping it all a secret. Rounding out the Girardi family is her mom, Helen (Steenburgen), her 15-year-old science geek brother, Luke (Michael Welch), and her older brother, Kevin (Jason Ritter), a former high school sports star who is in a wheelchair as a result of a disabling car accident. Unsure of what God wants, and if she's even sane, Joan tentatively begins to follow God's cryptic directives, all the while trying to retain a "normal" teen-aged existence. Barbara Hall ("Judging Amy") is the executive producer for CBS Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

THE HANDLER
Image
(Friday, 10:00-11:00 PM) stars Joe Pantoliano ("The Sopranos") as Joe Renato, an FBI agent who trains and handles agents who go undercover to solve crimes at all levels of Los Angeles' diverse society. From underground prostitution rings and drug traffickers to the worlds of high-tech and high finance, it's a behind-the-scenes look at how Joe's well-schooled operatives infiltrate and tackle them all. Joe is the ultimate "puppet-master" who also interfaces with government and local law enforcement agencies that come to him for help with both long-term and quick sting operations. He knows from personal experience that going undercover is an all-or-nothing job. Any lapse in "character" can mean the difference between life and death for his operatives and Joe goes to great lengths to make sure his people are properly prepared, mentally and physically. He tirelessly directs a revolving cast of characters, including Lily (Anna Belknap, "Deadline"), a wide-eyed rookie undercover agent; Darnell (Hill Harper, "City of Angels"), the seasoned veteran; Heather (Lola Glaudini, "The Sopranos"), an enthusiastic transfer, and Marcy (Tanya Wright), Joe's trustworthy assistant and sole confidante. They all walk a fine line between fighting crimes and committing them, all the while looking out for each other. Chris Haddock ("MacGyver," "Da Vinci's Inquest") is the executive producer for Viacom Productions, Inc.

COLD CASE
Image
(Sunday, 8:00-9:00 PM) stars Kathryn Morris ("Minority Report") in a drama about Lilly Rush, the lone female detective in the Philadelphia homicide squad who finds her calling when she's assigned to "cold cases" -- crimes that have never been solved. Where previously she had used her instinctive understanding of the criminal mind to crack current murder cases, this smart and driven detective is now intrigued by new challenges -- interrogating witnesses to old crimes whose lives and circumstances have since changed, making use of today's new science and finding fresh clues to cases once thought to be unsolvable. Lilly is also prepared for the consequences -- that her work will open old wounds and may lead suspects to commit new crimes. When she hits a dead-end, Lilly seeks advice from her respected mentor, Lt. Tom Stillman (John Finn). Also on the team is Det. Will Jeffries (Mel Winkler), who's been around long enough to know where all the bodies are buried; Det. Chris Lassing (Justin Chambers), Lilly's handsome, straight-ahead partner, and Det. Ronnie Vera (Jeremy Ratchford), a tough cop who's considered the go-to guy for getting a confession. Lilly sees her new assignment as a turning point in her career, and she makes it her business to ensure that no victim is ever forgotten. Jerry Bruckheimer ("CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Without a Trace"), Jonathan Littman ("CSI," "Without a Trace") and Meredith Stiehm ("ER") serve as executive producers for CBS Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television Production Inc.

TWO AND A HALF MEN
Image
(Monday, 9:30-10:00 PM) stars Golden Globe-winner Charlie Sheen ("Spin City"), Jon Cryer ("Pretty in Pink") and Tony Award-winner Blythe Danner ("Meet the Parents") in a comedy about a wealthy bachelor whose life is turned upside down when his brother and young nephew move into his Malibu beach house. Charlie Harper (Sheen) savors his swinging single status and his lucrative job as the writer of popular jingles, but his self-indulgent lifestyle is about to come to an end when his about-to-be-divorced, younger brother, Alan (Cryer), and Alan's 10-year-old son, Jake (Angus T. Jones, "Bringing Down the House"), move into his beach-front home. As Alan, an uptight chiropractor, comes to terms with being dumped by his wife, Judith (Marin Hinkle, "Once and Again"), he gets little compassion from his self-absorbed brother. Soon, however, polar opposites Charlie and Alan discover that they have more in common than their strained relationship with their socialite mother, Evelyn (Danner) -- they both love Jake and want what's best for him. The brothers agree to create a home for Jake at Charlie's, despite the realization that they'll likely drive each other crazy in the process. Chuck Lorre ("Dharma & Greg"), Lee Aronsohn, Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum, Mark Burg and Oren Koules are executive producers for Chuck Lorre Productions, Inc. and The Tannenbaum Company in association with Warner Bros. Television Production Inc.

THE STONES
Image
(Wednesday, 9:30-10:00 PM) stars Jay Baruchel ("Undeclared"), Lindsay Sloane ("Grosse Pointe"), Robert Klein ("How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days") and Judith Light ("Who's the Boss?") in a comedy about the crazy reality of two adult children living in their childhood home with their divorcing but still friendly parents. Winston Stone (Baruchel), a brainy science geek, is thrown for a loop when he and his hip, funky sister, Karly (Sloane), meet their parents, Barbara (Light) and Stan (Klein), to celebrate their anniversary -- and the elders announce that they are getting an amicable divorce after 25 years of marriage. Winston sees it as the end of the world but Karly acts like it doesn't really matter. Now, as the Stones still try to live under one roof, they may nag, tease, annoy and antagonize each other -- but they always do it with love. Emmy Award-winning writers and producers David Kohan & Max Mutchnick ("Will & Grace") and Jenji Kohan ("Gilmore Girls") are executive producers for KoMut Entertainment, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television Production Inc.

THE O.C
Image
DOUG LIMAN ("The Bourne Identity," "Go"), McG ("Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," "Fastlane") and FOX, the network that brought you "Beverly Hills, 90210," invite you to visit THE O.C. THE O.C., otherwise known as Orange County, California, is an idyllic paradise – a wealthy, harbor-front community where everything and everyone appears to be perfect. But beneath the surface is a world of shifting loyalties and identities, of kids living secret lives, hidden from their parents, and of parents living secret lives, hidden from their children. RYAN ATWOOD (BENJAMIN MCKENZIE), a troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks who is thrust into this world, will soon learn that nothing is what it seems. He moves to the O.C. when SANDY COHEN (PETER GALLAGHER, "American Beauty," "While You Were Sleeping"), an idealistic pro-bono public defender, invites him to stay in his guest house. Sandy's wife, KIRSTEN (KELLY ROWAN), wealthy and beautiful, former homecoming queen, perfect spouse, mother, and business woman, isn't happy that Ryan has moved in. And she's worried about how it will affect their teenage son SETH (ADAM BRODY, "Growing Up Brady," "Neverland"), a soulful dreamer ostracized by his peers. Making the whole situation more interesting is MARISSA COOPER (MISCHA BARTON), the heartbreakingly beautiful girl next door who seems to glide through life effortlessly. That is, until the indiscretions of her wealthy father JIMMY (TATE DONOVAN, "Hercules," "Mister Sterling") threaten to break her world apart. THE O.C. is a story of fathers and sons, husbands and wives, and the coming of age of three young people. Ryan's arrival is the catalyst for new alliances forged, old flames rekindled, and unlikely friendships born. It comes from Warner Bros. Television, Wonderland and Hypnotic.

JERRY BRUCKHEIMER ("CSI," "Black Hawk Down") and JIM LEONARD ("Thieves") team to create a new, intense character drama about a world you've never seen. SKIN is the story of two young lovers, desperate to be together, but who have two warring families who will do anything to keep them apart, and almost anything to destroy each other. ADAM (D. J. COTRONA), a 17-year-old Latino from east L.A., meets JEWEL (OLIVIA WILDE), 16, a wealthy, beautiful Westside girl, at a party. They fall for each other, passionately, purely, and completely, before they realize that their parents are at "war." Adam's Latina mother LAURA (RACHEL TICOTIN), a judge, and Anglo father MICHAEL (KEVIN ANDERSON, "Nothing Sacred"), the Los Angeles District Attorney, are prominent members of the city's judicial system. And, at the moment, Michael happens to be investigating and prosecuting Jewel's father, LARRY (RON SILVER, "Ali," "The West Wing," "Festival in Cannes"), the most successful producer of adult entertainment in Los Angeles. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
Image
MICHAEL BLUTH (JASON BATEMAN, "The Sweetest Thing"), a widower, wants nothing more than to be a good father to his 13-year-old son GEORGE MICHAEL (MICHAEL CERA), so he resolves to quit the family business for good and move to Arizona to start a new life. But instead Michael's eccentric family pulls him back in when his father GEORGE BLUTH SR. (JEFFREY TAMBOR) gets arrested for shifty accounting practices at Bluth Co. This sends the family reeling, and when their assets are frozen, this puts a major crimp in each of their lives. LUCILLE BLUTH (JESSICA WALTER), Michael's mother, is a flamboyant, stylish and spoiled society matron who finds herself alone in her Balboa Bay Club penthouse without the financial means to maintain it. GEORGE OSCAR BLUTH II (WILL ARNETT), "Gob," Michael's older, wildly eccentric brother, has devoted his life to the field of magic but now he must contend with the possibility of getting a real job in the real world. BUSTER BLUTH (TONY HALE) is Michael's younger brother, a professional graduate student who is alternately cool and incredibly self-conscious. Michael decides to stay in Orange County and invites his sister LINDSAY FUNKE (PORTIA DE ROSSI, "Ally McBeal") and her family to move in with him and George Michael. Lindsay is married to the hapless TOBIAS (DAVID CROSS), a doctor who lost his license after performing CPR on a man who was sunbathing and didn't need it. Lindsay and Tobias are the ultra-permissive parents of MAE (ALIA SHAWKAT), "Maeby," who delights in finding unique ways to rebel against her over-indulgent parents. Michael reluctantly finds himself having to pull his offbeat family up by their bootstraps and slowly "teach" them how to live without the family's largess. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT comes from Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox Television. LUIS
Image
LUIS (LUIS GUZMAN, "Traffic," "Punch-Drunk Love," "Boogie Nights") is living the American dream. He's the proud owner of a Spanish Harlem donut shop and the landlord of the building it's in. But a dream is only a dream, and you've got to wake up sometime. He wakes up every day ... to a cast of characters that includes an obnoxious elderly Irish woman who lives in a rent-controlled apartment; a Chinese delivery boy who swears he was a cardiologist back in the "Old Country" and doesn't speak English because "This is America – you speak Spanish"; and to TK (MALCOLM BARRETT) a young African-American kid who harasses his customers by trying to sell them "merchandise" he found in Luis' dumpster. Luis' family doesn't help much. His ex-wife, ISABELLA (DIANA-MARIA RIVA), constantly reminds him why they got divorced, but somehow she can't get enough of him or his donuts. Their daughter, MARLY (JACLYN DESANTIS), is responsible and hardworking but lives in Luis' building with her free-loading boyfriend GREG, a pretentious "artiste" who hopes to pay his share of the rent by selling his paintings. At least Luis has Ginger – his mint, '82 Olds Delta 88, and his trusted assistant RICHIE (CHARLIE DAY), who pines for Luis' daughter. Luis is not quite conservative, not quite liberal. A MINUTE WITH STAN HOOPER
For ten years, "A Minute with Stan Hooper" has closed each episode of "Newsline," America's highest rated newsmagazine. In his "Minute" segments, STAN HOOPER (NORM MACDONALD, "Saturday Night Live," "Norm") has been telling real stories of real people that make up the fabric of America. But now Stan is making his "Minute" more honest. He no longer wants to comment on life from a studio in midtown Manhattan. He wants to live in the vanishing America he has been talking about for a decade - a place where ordinary people enjoy life's simple pleasures, where people have never heard of cappuccino. So, Stan and his wife MOLLY (PENELOPE ANN MILLER, "Kindergarten Cop," "Full Disclosure") are moving to Waterford Falls, Wisconsin. Stan thinks this small town they passed through on their honeymoon 15 years ago is the embodiment of the old-fashioned values and idyllic lifestyle he has been championing in his "Minute" reports. Except that the house that Stan and Molly rent comes with a butler, GARY (BRIAN HOWE). And the local cheese mogul's son, RYAN (ERIC LIVELY), who is dating a waitress, CHELSEA (REAGAN DALE NEIS, "Maybe It's Me"), temporarily moves in with Stan and Molly. And that the two guys who own the local diner, PETE (DANIEL ROEBUCK, "Agent Cody Banks," "We Were Soldiers") and LOU (GARRET DILLAHUNT) PETERSON, are a couple. Stan Hooper is a commentator on life, whose observations and insights will solve some problems while creating others. A MINUTE WITH STAN HOOPER is created by BARRY KEMP ("Coach," "Newhart") and Norm Macdonald, and produced by Paramount Television.

THE ORTEGAS
Image
Live from California's beautiful San Fernando Valley ... it's THE ORTEGAS. Based on the International Emmy-winning and hit BBC series, "The Kumars at No. 42," this inventive new series blends comedy, reality and improvisation into one wild, unique mix. LUIS ORTEGA (AL MADRIGAL, "2002 Montreal Comedy Festival") is the likeable young host of his very own talk show, thanks to his generous immigrant parents HENRY (CHEECH MARIN, "Nash Bridges") and ESMERALDA (TERRI HOYOS, "Town and Country"), who built a television studio in the family's backyard. Each week, the family -- including Luis' darling and often uncensored grandmother MARIA (RENEE VICTOR, "Never Trust a Serial Killer") -- welcomes actual celebrity guests into their home, smothering them with hospitality and homemade traditional Mexican snacks. And once they've step out of the back of the house and into the television studio, the talk show begins. At this point the entire family showers their guests with spontaneous and wide-ranging interview topics leaving the live audience wondering what could possibly be next. Look out Dave and Jay - Luis Ortega is on his way. As if Luis, Henry, Esmeralda and Maria are not enough, THE ORTEGAS will introduce their friends, family, and neighbors who inhabit this crazy world called "Van Nuys." They are all as colorful and entertaining as the Ortegas themselves. WALLY WOLODARSKY ("The Oblongs"), GAVIN POLONE ("Hack"), JIMMY MULVILLE ("The Kumars at No. 42") and DENISE O'DONOGHUE ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?") serve as executive producers. LINDA MENDOZA ("The Bernie Mac Show") directs this comedy from Pariah and Hat Trick Productions.

WONDERFALLS
Image
Set against the backdrop of Niagara Falls, WONDERFALLS is a funny, provocative and magical one-hour dramedy about JAYE TYLER (CAROLINE DHAVERNAS), an underachieving twenty-something souvenir shop worker whose life is forever changed after she has what her family calls "an episode." That's when inanimate animal figures – toys, cartoon images, anything in the form of an animal – begin talking to her, and their cryptic messages set into motion a chain of events that invariably lead her into the lives of others in need. Described by its creators BRYAN FULLER ("Star Trek: Voyager") and TODD HOLLAND ("Malcolm in the Middle"), with tongues firmly in cheek, as "Touched by a Crazy Person," the series focuses on Jaye as she meddles in, muddles up, and ultimately betters the lives of herself, her eccentric family of overachievers, and the eclectic variety of strangers that cross her path. Over the course of this series Jaye will discover that the world around her really is a magical place, and that the seemingly random events in her life are actually all part of something much greater. WONDERFALLS is from 20th Century Fox Television and Regency Television.

-- Executive Producers/Writers: Bryan Fuller, Todd Holland

CRACKING UP
Image
: BEN, an idealistic psychology student, gets more than he bargained for when he moves into the guest house of a wealthy Beverly Hills family. TED (CHRIS McDONALD, "Spy Kids 2," "Perfect Storm") the proud patriarch of the family, is a successful pharmaceutical executive. Ted's wife, LESLEY (MOLLY SHANNON, "Saturday Night Live," "Superstar"), is the happy homemaker and helpmate. Their three children are CHLOE (CAITLIN WACHS), the pretty cheerleader, who suffers from delusions of grandeur; PRESTON (JAKE SANDVIG), the all-American athlete, and TANNER (NATHAN NORTON), who they all consider the "troubled child." They may look like the picture-perfect clan, living the American dream in a gorgeous mansion, but on closer inspection, each member of the family proves to be crazier than the next. Ben and his fun-loving friend, LIAM (DAVID WALTON), soon find themselves playing in-house therapists to a brood of whackos. The household is the perfect training ground for a budding therapist and, although Ben is shocked by some of their more eccentric behavior, he is determined to help "fix" this family. They may be "cracking up," but they're also fascinating, lovable, and a whole lot of fun. CRACKING UP is written by MIKE WHITE, the award-winning writer and star of "The Good Girl," "Chuck & Buck" and "Orange County." The series is directed by PAUL and CHRIS WEITZ of "About a Boy" and "American Pie" fame.

STILL LIFE
Image
STILL LIFE tells the story of an American family, the MORGANS, through the eyes of JAKE MORGAN, the eldest of BEN and CHARLOTTE MORGAN's four children. Jake was the golden child that every parent dreams of having. Following in his father's footsteps, he decided to become a cop. And, on his first day on the job, Jake was murdered. We rejoin the Morgan family a year after Jake's death. Jake now is our narrator, watching his family from beyond with amusement, longing and neverending curiosity as their true lives are revealed to him. Jake is not a ghost, but in many ways he is still a part of the lives of the people he loves, and he still has unresolved issues. His mother, CHARLOTTE (SUSANNA THOMPSON, "Dragonfly"), has been galvanized by tragedy to resume her dream of running for public office. His father, BEN (DAVID KEITH, "Daredevil," "Behind Enemy Lines"), a detective, must overcome the guilt he feels for his son's death and rediscover the lust for life he once had. Jake's younger brother, MAX (JENSEN ACKLES, "Dark Angel"), is a 21-year-old concert of darkness and light. His love-hate relationship with Jake is revealed in a love triangle with MAGGIE (MORENA BACCARIN), the girl they both love and owner of an art gallery. EMILY (AUDREY MARIE ANDERSON, "Moonlight Mile"), Jake's 19-year-old sister and best friend, is a haunting beauty whose life has been set adrift by the absence of her brother. She is looking for someone to give her that connection again, and the search could take her anywhere. His youngest sister, DAISY (JEANETTE BROX), is a precocious 16-year-old coming of age faster than she is ready. She is a positive, upbeat spirit buoyed by the belief that Jake is "still here." By turns heart-breaking and life-affirming, joyful, combative and complicated, STILL LIFE is a beautiful celebration of love, life and family.
