DVDs - what did you get?

Post by SanDeE* » Dec 27th 2002, 12:13 am

Seeing as how the holidays may be over for some, and also seeing as how many of us forum-ers here are DVD freaks, I was wondering what titles other people got as gifts (or for themselves) this holiday season. My boxes o' treasures (so far - I have one more family xmas to go) includes:

Back to the Future trilogy
Minority Report
Novocaine
Panic Room
Tommy Boy

That really feels like a lot for me! I've been looking forward to new CDs more, actually. I've grown bored with my collection lately. Anyone else? Please share!
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

I got Hope Floats from my husband. Wonderful movie and great soundtrack.

That's surprising, but that was the only DVD we received this year!

Hey Kristin, Megs:

I got Jeves & Wooster Second & Third Seasons
Austin Powers: Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember
Red Planet
Star Trek Movies I-VI (I,II & III being Special Editions)

The Star Trek Movies were a complete suprise for me, the others I had asked for.

All in all a pretty good haul.

Greetings! :D My DVD haul:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season Two set - this, from my fiance who wants NOTHING to do with the show. Now that's love  I have my order in for Season Three, hoo-hoo!!
Also got The Dirty Dozen (Lee Marvin & Bronson are SO cool. I know, Marvin is gone) and Chocolat - just gotta love this one.

Totally satisfied.

When I was asked what I wanted for Christmas, I handed in my usual list... and managed to get all of it. I needed one of the Spanish announcers to scream GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL after it was all overwith.

The loot...

Band of Brothers
Kino's German Horror Classics (silent, with four movies)
Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler (silent)
Better off Dead (hehe)
A.I.
Real Genius ("I drank what?")
MASH Season Two

I didn't ask for the Back to the Future set bacuase I'm going to wait until the corrected discs are in the stores, a wait that may just drive me out of my skull because the thing is everywhere.

What's making me even kookier is that I'm house, dog and birdsitting for my girlfriend (who's in the air as I type... *sniff*) at the Jersey Shore(TM) until Sunday, and she doesn't have a DVD player.

Ah well, I can wait.

...

Maybe. :D

Back to the Future corrected discs? The set I got seems to play fine and has everything on them to me. How did you hear about this?

Hey Kristin,

Universal has gone on record and stated that they framed the letterboxed editions of Parts Two and Three incorrectly - meaning that they either allowed too much headroom or not enough in some shots, cutting off heads or hands. The first movie is fine. Since I'm getting the feeling that I'm not explaining this properly, here is a brief article from The Digital Bits...
A lot of people have asked us about the mis-framing problem with the Back to the Future 2 & 3 DVDs. What appears to have happened is that the widescreen matting has been done in error, so that the image that appears on the disc is not correctly framed as it should be. There's a thread over at the HTF with screen shots illustrating this, so check it out if you're interested (note that the pictures show the R2 version, but the R1 transfer is the same). Here's the e-mail Universal is sending people about this issue:

"Thank you for your email. Universal Studios will exchange Back to the Future parts 2 and 3 for copies with the updated framing in late February 2003. You may send the DVDs back now or wait until February. Please send Back to the Future disks 2 and 3, without the case, and a letter with the following information: Name, Full Mailing Address, Daytime Phone Number, Reason for Return and Return Address. Send to:

Back to the Future DVD Returns
PO Box 224468
Dallas, Texas 75260

Thank you,
Universal Studios Customer Service"

By the way, we also have a Canadian customer service number for people to call: 866-532-2202. Thanks to Bits readers Mark P. and Scott B. for sending that in.
If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me. Also, if anybody wants to, we can start a new thread to address any questions and keep tabs on any updates. I'll be happpy to help in any way I can.

Thanks,
Gary

Okay, so I think I get it. When the corrected BttF 2 & 3 discs come out in Feb 2003, you can mail the "oops" discs to that address in Texas, and they'll mail you back the corrected ones. Free of charge (except postage)? Do I have this right? I guess I didn't even notice when I watched them. Now that I know about it of course I'll notice it from now on and it'll drive me nuts. You shouldn't have even said anything! I'd have been blissfully ignorant. (I'm just giving you the business, you know!) :D

I love seeing what other people got for DVDs this xmas/hanukah/etc.

I got Ice Age and Spiderman. Ice Age is a treat for every good 5.1 home cinema sound system (and the picture quality is more than perfect!), but the movie itself lacks something - though I don't know what exactly.

When I re-watched Spiderman yesterday, the lovestory between Peter Parker and Mary-Jane reminded me in some ways of MSCL. Not only because Kirsten Dunst has red hair in that movie, there are also some very MSCLish scenes, like the one where Peter Parker secretly watches Mary-Jane in the neighbour house from his room. Then he brings the trash out and meets her and they talk. Big MSCL déja-vu. ;-)

But I guess it's just the typical (movie) lovestory: Loser loves girl, girl loves bad guy, girl only wants friendship with loser (if she notices him at all). Okay, the part where Brian Krakow turns into a Super-Hero and saves the earth from all evil and wins the love of Angela Chase is missing from MSCL - but who knows what would have happened in season 2 ;-) ;-)

I hate you Gary, I've been eyeing that Kino set since it came out... let me know how it is.

I also picked up the Dr. Mabuse dvd for my girlfriend for christmas...we have damn good taste I tell ya ;)

What I got:

Visitor Q (japanese movie)
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie - yay my Bunuel set is done (atleast what is released R1)
Get a Life Vol. 2 - now i need to buy vol. 1
Iria - Zeiram the animation - old anime title I've been putting off buying, good xmas gift.

What I gave:

My girlfriend:
Following - from the director of Memento (which to me means it can go either way)
Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler - great silent
Surviving Desire - older Hal Hartley movie (with shorts)
Charlie Brown Holiday set

I bought To Catch a Thief for her but gave that to my aunt to give to her instead

My sister:
Tomorrow People Series 1 (R2) - old british kids tv show (use to air on nickelodeon when we were young), a copy should be on its way here for me :)

her husband:

Eddie Izzard - the Circle (R2)

Gifts I bought myself :) :
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover - classic Greenaway, not his best, but close. Finishes my collection of available Greenaways' in R1.
X- TV Series Vol 1 + artbox - on a whim.
Meet the Feebles - one of Peter Jackson's funniest and most disturbing...needed to replace old vhs copy.
Azumanga Daioh vol 1 - anime, HK bootleg R0
Witch Hunter Robin vol 1 - anime, HK bootleg R0

I received Threesome and I bought High Fidelity for myself.

Sab,
But I guess it's just the typical (movie) lovestory: Loser loves girl, girl loves bad guy, girl only wants friendship with loser (if she notices him at all). Okay, the part where Brian Krakow turns into a Super-Hero and saves the earth from all evil and wins the love of Angela Chase is missing from MSCL - but who knows what would have happened in season 2
I think Season 2 would have had Brian coming to terms with powers and romance, while a new, darker force (in flannel?) tempts Jordan towards a life of crime using his newly discovered ability to brood a person into submission.

fnordboy,

ROFL! Don't hate me buddy. We just have good taste. :D

I watched parts of Caligari and some of Waxworks - nice! The menu for Caligari is creepy too (caught me off guard).

Since I was given some gift certificates and moola for Christmas, I've added three new discs to the library...

Minority Report (I rented it and had to get it)
From Hell
U2: Best of 1990-2000 (still have my fingers crossed for them to release the 80-90 set)

You don't mean Get a Life the sitcom with Chris Elliott, do you? I remember watching this when it was on. I thought he was good in this, but Cabin Boy was painful to watch.

Of course I mean the Chris Elliott sitcom :) . A great show.

Now don't be dissing Cabin Boy, it has a fairly large cult following. Actually I enjoyed Cabin Boy only for Andy Richter. His performance is great in it.
