New feature: Shoutbox

You may have noticed the so-called "shoutbox" on our forum mainpage - it's a replacement for our old Java Chat tool which was only rarely used. The shoutbox allows registered users to exchange messages in a chat-like style. All messages are automatically deleted after two days.

If it turns out to be a useful addition to our forum, then we'll keep it. :-)

That's cool, but what does the little "censor" button do?

It allows us to remove certain messages without deleting it. I don't know whether it also works for non-moderators.

I tried it; I am only allowed to use it on my own text; it replaces the original text with "shout removed !"

That option doesn't show up for us lowly regulars  Totally just kidding! I mean, yeah, we don't have that function, but I 'don't have a complex about it or anything :| ...

no it's there for us too Jody. if you click on "shoutbox" to view the larger version it appears as a slash in the top right corner of your own posts.

I feel like the shout posts used to get counted in the post count in the upper right corner and that now it is not ... is this right or am I just on crack? (Not mutally exclusive)

You mean that "xy posts since last visit" figure? No, the Shoutbox posts were never counted in that post count.

But sometimes the number of posts since last visit differs from the number of updated topics, which may be a bit confusing. The forum frontpage reports the number of new posts, but if you click on that link, it reports the number of updated topics. So if there was heavy traffic in one topic (eg "Name That Character"), the posts figure on the frontpage is high, while the search link only reports "1 topic found".
