Long ago someone on the net complied a list of all the songs played on MSCL. They made a tape of it (I think called "Our So-Called Soundtrack"), and then distributed copies around the net. I'll go see if I can hunt down the list of songs somewhere (heck, it may even be hidden on this site). That might give you a foundation to build on, as well as avoid the confusion of compiliing dozens of songs/bands.

ok here it is

Jack: My coworker is friends with Devon Gummersall. I'll see if he'll email Devon about that one song he was listening to on his walkman (Life of Brian). Hopefully he'll remember! :)

Oldguy: These are the songs I can contribute to the comp:
Dreams - The Cranberries*
Cruel Swing - Jawbox**
Sodajerk - Buffalo Tom
Late at Night - Buffalo Tom
Down About it - Lemonheads
South Carolina - Archers of Loaf
Dawn Can't Decide - Lemonheads
Fountain and Fairfax - Afghan Wigs
Make It Home - Juliana Hatfield
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
Book Song - Frente!
Blue Moon - Elvis

*Would prefer someone else to donate this. My version is a tape and a CD version would be better.
**Possible, but not positive. I think my boyfriend has this on CD.

Soma: I can donate a CD copy of "Dreams" by the Cranberries. Great job finding the list of all the songs!

I did some browsing and I can contribute mp3s of the following songs:
Return to Innocence- Enigma
Spin the Bottle- Juliana Hatfield Three
What is Love- Haddaway (Rickie and Delia's dance)
Everybody Hurts- R.E.M.
Try- Billy Pilgrim
Sesame Street Theme (old version)

So if my count is correct, we've listed 18 songs that we have available between us. I think it would be cool if we could (between us) figure out all the songs that were used in the show and then make a cd set of them all (if we can find them). We probably shouldn't use songs that are on the official soundtrack with all the other songs possible- we'll be doing good to fit the songs we've listed...

soma, you have done an incredible research job. I wouldn't've even known where to begin. What a
stroke of luck that your coworker is friends with Devon Gummersall (by the way, that walkman song
was in Betrayal). Thank you, thank you, and don't apologize for being excited about this, I'm sure
we all are. Looking at the list, I was surprised that that much music was used. Thanks again.

I tend to agree that we shouldn't include songs already included on the official Soundtrack. The soundtrack's pretty readily available, and not including those songs frees up more space for additional songs. however, if our goal IS to make a Comprehensive soundtrack, maybe they should be included?

I think that if we DO include the songs from the soundtrack, then we should only do it if we all rack our brains and figure out just about every song used, and then put them all on cds in order or something. If we end up just making a cd or two with whatever songs we can bring together, then we can just count the soundtrack as one cd in the set and not have to worry about "wasting" our cd space (remember, we are going to have to pay for the cds, or tapes I guess, to put these on and want to save as much space as possible for the stuff we DON'T have).

Also, if oldguy's going to do the actual cd, I'll volunteer to make cases for them...I love messing with photo editing and all, so I could design covers for the cds and stuff....what do you think? Maybe we could vote on what picture to use on the cover or something....and we could list everyone that's contributed to this discussion in the "thank yous" and list mscl websites (especially this one)- all this in case people besides us want copies- Just ideas though.

I sort of had an idea about this- What about a double album if necessary?

you're right!

sorry, i don't know what i was thinking. You're right, it was Betrayal.

I'm personally for putting all the songs on the CD and in order of appearance (which would likely be a double album). I totally understand if other people are against that though.

As for the cover graphics idea, I was thinking the same thing! I'd love to do some graphics too, and then we can vote anonymously as to which one to use. I agree with thanking people as well, especially this site.

I would definitely go for order of appearance and the double album thing...and I'd be all up for you doing graphics too soma. Maybe we could each do an album (if there are two)...they'd have some of the same things but a lot would be the same...we could share graphics and all....but this is a dependent on what everyone else thinks of course. =) Our main problem is going to be figuring out all the songs...maybe we could divide up the episodes and then each of us take ours and try to figure them out...we could at least jot down some lyrics to post to see if anyone else can figure it out.

WOW! I'm am psyched about this whole CD thing--I'm glad that I brought it back up to the surface!! You guys are determined, and I like that! :-) Here's my two cents: I like the double album idea. Let's include as many songs as we can find! About putting songs on there from the CD that is already out--I don't necessarily think we should include ALL of these songs, but perhaps we could vote on a few to put on our CD. For example, I would really like to have Make It Home and the Theme Song on our new CD. What do you guys think? I also like the idea of us voting on a cover graphic--that way everyone would feel like they had a part in this project. Again, thank you to all of you guys who are stepping up and taking the initiative to put this CD together! I can't wait!

note to me: DUH!

heheh, I kept getting confused because people would say they wanted all the songs off the shows on the CD, but not the songs on the soundtrack! I kept thinking, "But some of those songs ARE on the soundtrack". Then I realized everyone meant they didn't want the songs ON the soundtrack that AREN'T on the show. Duh squared.

But I'm still a bit confused on why we'd go through the episodes again to write down the songs. The list I posted above in the thread is a complete list of songs/bands from the show in their order of appearance. Someone make me say "duh tripled". :)
