Once and Again

OK... I may be the only one interested in the new show from MSCL producers.
Really, I'm not that old... only in my 30's... BUT: I was immensely impressed
with the first airing of the new "Once and Again."

Much like the first time I saw "My So Called Life," at first I didn't know exactly
how to evaluate this show... I had no reference in which to compare... which
makes it rather difficult to evaluate the first show. All I can say is that it was
nothing like anything I have ever seen on television before. Actually, it was
nothing like anything I have ever seen on television... or movies... period.

Which is not to say the show was perfect. I think the acting could be a little
better. But I was floored by the dialogue (and admittedly I was drawn in by
the music from... none other than the same bloke who did the MSCL music).

In short, I think the show takes television to a whole new level... which, unfortunately,
television audiences probably aren't ready for. I loved it. It was totally original
(except for the obvious allusions to "My So Called Life").

I probably can't give a completely subjective review at this time... It might take
a little time before I have a fully rationale view of the show. But I will conclude
with this: The first episode of "Once and Again" was the best thing I've seen
on TV since MSCL... No doubt about it. It was the first time since MSCL's
original airings that I was totally floored by a show (I mean, I had nothing
in which to compare the show, nothing in which to say --- "It's worse than this",
"It's better than this", etc. Frankly, I don't know if the show is realistic.
Who would know, except a small group of people under similar circumstances?
All I know is, I was totally fascinated for 1 hour.

I agree. I mean, I don't know how the show is gonna shape up, but the first episode definintely provides a solid foundation. I LOVED the black&white convessionals intercut between scenes.

Hey. I agree, it's one of those shows that only comes along once in a while. I liked it a lot.

Yeah, those B&W scenes were cool. And I just thought of something ---
Some of the style of this show is similar to a couple of Woody Allen films
I've seen ---- Have you ever seen the movie "Husbands and Wives"?
They do a similar thing with characters giving "interviews" at various times.
I've been trying to find things to compare this show to... Another thing I
thought of was that, it's like MSCL, except the adults are the main characters.
Imagine MSCL, except the main stories surround Patty and Graham... that's
kind how the show strikes me!

When is this show on? I haven't even heard about it anywhere else except from you guys! You make it out to sound really good--nothing can live up to MSCL, but another really good show sounds good to me!!

The first show was last night at 10PM (Tuesdays,ABC,10PM, "Once and Again"). It's produced by none other than Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick. (thirtysomething, mscl, relativity) and music by...you guessed it - W.G. Snuffy Walden! Check it out. It's good. Find out more at http://www.onceandagain.com.

Angelika:

I think you'll really like this show. Stylistically, it reminds me a lot of MSCL.
Of course the content is totally different, but it's really well done. I think it's
great to see that the producers are retaining certain methods they used with
MSCL --- They're not afraid to use aspects of the style of MSCL, mixed with
some rather daring new techniques, too. When I first heard about this show,
I figured it would be pretty good --- but I'm actually surprised how daring the
show really turned out to be... Check it out!

I haven't had a chance to check the show out yet. What network is it on? As for WG Snuffy Walden, what show doesn't he do the music for now? He seems to be the only one in the business.

I don't remember what other shows he does right now because I haven't watched much tv in a while. I just remember that around the time MSCL went off the air I noticed his name in the credits of so many shows. As for early edition, I heard that it is coming back, at least in the US and there is a re-cast of the main character and another character is leaving. I never was a fan but the revamped version sounds worse.

I've seen all 3 episodes of Once and Again and I thought it was very well written. Very surprised all that they could show on TV in the 2nd episode. But very good show, almost as good as MSCL.
