"The Last Samurai" director Ed Zwick has come onboard "The Lions of Al-Rassan" movie for Warner Bros. Pictures. Vera Blasi ("Woman on Top") will adapt the script from the Guy Gavriel Kay novel, with Cathy Schulman, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Marshall Herskovitz, Rick Solomon, and Zwick producing.

Set in the fictitious city of Al-Rassan in medieval Spain, "The Lions of Al-Rassan" centers around a love triangle between two princes and a female doctor set against a background of religious and cultural clashes.

Commenting on Kay's novel, Zwick told Variety, "He has done something remarkable in imagining a very compelling world, which has some basis in history, and yet departs in a way that adds a kind of magical realism. That is a blend I've never seen before and feels like a different way to approach an epic story."
