I remember seeing this 1996 movie and liking it overall, so I am hoping to watch it this time around with more of an eye toward how MSCL's Angela does in the flick.

The movie is slated to air Friday, 3/1, on HBO Signature from 9:45 to 11:30 a.m. Eastern and will repeat on the same channel from 10 to 11:45 p.m. Eastern.

This was a mediocre movie with some superb acting from Claire. I would not necessarily recommend the movie on its own merit, but every Claire Danes fan should see it at least once. There are two scenes in particular which really showcase Claire's abilities. The first one is the drunk scene, where she stumbles home drunk from a beach party (I understand that she did some actual "field work" to learn how to act drunk for this scene). The second section is actually two successive scenes: where she dreamt of riding bikes with her mother and the subsequent emotional outburst with the rest of the family. Very powerful.

(I wont mention the thong scene.....oops! :-)

I know that a lot of people found this movie kind of dull and pointless, but I really enjoyed it. One of my theater professors in college was obsessed with the play that the movie was based on (he even named one of his daughters Gillian) so maybe some of his enthusiasm rubbed off on me. Anyway, I think Claire is great in it and I definitely would recommend watching it more than once to appreciate the subtlety of the performances.

I have this movie on Laserdisc, but have wanted it on DVD, Does anyone know if it is available on DVD?

I think it's a good movie, it has a sad theme to it & I think that if you have ever lost anyone really close to you then you will come to appreciate the movie in general. I like Claire's role in this film. I especially like the scenes when she is talking w/ her father at the beach up on the hill & HE asks if I say I Love you Enough also I really really like the scene at the end when she is saying goodbye to her father at the dock, also the music score I like, I bought the soundtrack too!!!

This is my first post here, I have been reading & visiting like..forever LOL I can't wait to get the new box set, What a great site this is..To keep the TV series alive, I appreciate this site!!!

Like chosephine, I do think this movie is worth a viewing or two. And I'm glad I watched this movie again because I really like it. I don't know what it is, but it speaks to me. Maybe it's the idea of what happens to a longtime husband when he loses the love of his life, or maybe it's the island setting, but I found the whole movie fun to watch. Also, the scenes with Michelle Pfeiffer are great. Then again, I've always liked her. I like how we see Gillian as if she is a real person just as her husband does.

As for Claire's role in the movie, ITA with Bill that she does a superb job in this one. It cracks me up when she admits to Freddie Prinze Jr.'s character that it's the first time that she's kissed with tongue. That is classic! This movie also allows Claire to expand her range a bit. Sure, she's still playing a teenager, but she playing a character that is haunted a bit and exploring life as well.

Welcome, R. I'm glad you delurked and posted, and I hope to see more of you on this board. I did a quick check on Amazon.com for the movie on DVD, and it turns out pre-orders are being taken for the disc that will be available in May. You can find out more at <A HREF="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 4840807</A> .

Thanks NightJessie, Appreciate the heads up on Amazon, I didn't realize that it was going to be coming out on DVD, like I said I have it on laserdisc but I will be sure to get this on DVD too, I think the movie is good and Claire being in it..well it makes it even better :) The material may not be for everyone but Claire does play a good part and it tackles real life issues of what a daughter would go through losing her mother so young in her life...

R, you'll have to let us know how the DVD compares with the laserdisc of this one. BTW, what is on the laserdisc other than the movie?

Hi, Unfortunately there is nothing extra on the laserdisc, I wished the theatrical trailer was on it but its not, It is widescreen which containes the black bars at the top & bottom of the screen but they are not very noticible, I believe with the widescreen format, you are watching the film in the way the director actaully shot the film. I hope the DVD will contain extra material & even the trailer would be neat.
