Crap.

I guess it official Roe v Wade, the Endangered Species Act, Labor Laws and what remains of the right to privacy...

are history.

Chief Rehnquist is dead.

While I feel very sorry for his family, I am more sorry for the rest of us facing not one but two Bush nominees to the court.

Sad, sad, sad day.

I wouldn't worry too much. The Supremes have a knack for doing the unexpected. Roberts, who Bush nominated to be the new Chief, has already made it known that he is a precedent type of guy. The right to abortion has been established law for a long time. I don't see him being a radical. Lean right? Yes. Buck the system for the GOP hard-core? Probably not. I think Bush's 2nd nominee will be in the same mold. The thing to be thankful for if you are Leftie is that the GOP doesn't have 60 Senate seats. The filibuster is alive and well. A hard-Rightie will have a hard time getting through the Senate.

Of course, my prediction that Bush would not pick a Caucasian man turned out wrong. Although I don't think he will nominate a woman to have two women on the Court, I do think he would like to be mentioned throughout history to be the first president to nominate a Latino, Indian, [insert other ethnic group here]. How many times have you heard that Reagan was the first president to nominate a woman?

Yeah,

I can't really see how this is a positive situation. Would have been nice if the Dems had fought a bit more...

What bothers me most is that it isn't really down to luck. Most of it is contrived nepotism of the highest order, and plenty of behind the scenes cunning. I'm not suggesting that he is in any way responsible for Renquist's death, only that much of what has happened to Bush has very little to do with luck.
