Bruges, Belgium

Well, twas my first wedding anniversary this weekend, so Mr. S organised us a lovely surprise weekend trip - to Bruges! I've been wanting to go there for some time, so it was great. Plus, I finished my exams on the wednesday previously so it was a double treat :D

We got the Eurostar to Brussels and then an ordinary train from there to Bruges. It did take around 4 hours to get there but it was worth it... Belgium in general and Bruges in particular was absolutely lovely. I am working on uploading some pics to my online album and I'll post the link when I've done it. Basically it is a medieval style heaven - all cobbled streets, gothic architecture, canals and the smell of pastries and chocolates is ever-present.
Belgium gave the world Belgian chocolates, waffles, trappist monk beer of astounding quality (if you have never tried the Framboise, get some! but be careful when you stand up, especially if you're from the USA....) and Tin Tin. I'm grateful to them. I've never been to Belgium before other than on a coach trip with school where we literally drove through it on the way to Germany. I'm pretty sure I'll go back. Plus, astoundingly, *everyone* there is tri-lingual. Dutch, French and English. It's a pretty big tourist centre but still, it puts us Brits to shame once again. :(

I want to go, too! You've made it sound great. But my cash flow is static right now. I am socking away a little bit of green for...a Harley. Don't ask me why. However, I'm still probably $10 grand short. A trip to Belgium would be cheaper. And safer. Unless the plane crashes.

Starbug,

Sounds like you had a blast. Very cool.

Not just you Brits put to shame. I and many, many Americans are but monolingual. I know a smattering of German but that's it. Sad thing is that I spent the first years of my life in Wurzburg. Took some more in high school and college. Does not appear to have stuck though.
