Guess WHAT everybody??!?!?!?

I have to move. LIKE TODAY. They are going to demolish my building on Dec. 1st. I am SO SO SO ANGRY. Mostly because this is my last semester, this is happening in the middle of my last semester. Not like I don't have anything to do! I have to take the GRE in a couple weeks, a music school exit exam, three concerts in the next couple of weeks, oh and not to mention I'm graduating the beginning of December. This is just so unspeakably horrible. So now, I have to search for an apartment AND a job because the new apartment I find I'm sure will cost more than this one, and I can't ask my mother for more money. :x
Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

That really sucks. What made them decide that they need to demolish a building on only two months' notice?! Unless it's dangerous to live there, you'd think they would try to give people a reasonable amount of time to find another place to live. If it makes you feel any better, my sister got kicked out of her place a month before getting her master's degree. Sadly, it wasn't anything even close to being justifiable like the building being torn down. The guy she was living with (as a roommate - he owned the house) decided he wanted his new girlfriend to move in immediately so he gave my sister 30 days notice, despite the fact that he KNEW my sister was about to graduate. He wouldn't wait until after her graduation to let her move out, so in the midst of trying to write her papers and all the assorted leaving school business, she was trying to pack and find a place to live. Total jerk. Anyway, good luck finding a new place. I know it's really hard to do that in the middle of the semester. Are you planning to stay in KC after graduation, or are you looking for a place just to get you through December?

Thanks candygirl, for the sympathy. They are tearing my building down in order to build new condos. Real nice, huh? And the thing is... I KNEW they were building condos around here. There has been this one sign up across the street since before I moved in here. My landlord didn't tell anyone until three days ago --- not by writing us personal letters, no. By posting a sign on the front door to the building. Again, REAL NICE. You know, moving doesn't bug me so much - I'm a college student, we have to move a lot. But having to do it in the middle of the semester sucks. I drove around yesterday and searched the internet, and there are a few places really close to my school that look available. One is actually owned by my same landlord, which could be a big plus (maybe I'd get priority and also they would have all my credit info already - it'd be more like a transfer than a move) Plus it's a lot closer to school - just around four blocks. I could walk most of the time - save a lot of money. I'll update you guys!

I feel for you - that's terrible. I doubt your landlord truly understands what an upheaval this is, right at the wrong time. Still, it's horrendous. I can't imagine trying to go househunting right in the middle of term. Ugh. (I'm having various trauma-related stress attacks in relation to my computer's numerous malfunctions, but that's another story). It's not like he didn't know these condos were being built... grrrrrr. Although, I do speak as a woman married to a man who goes around actually checking planning notices taped up on lamp-posts around the local area. I kid you not. I think it stems from a dim and distant past of being a planning lawyer.

I hope you do find somewhere soon. It reminds me of a friend of mine who was finishing up her phd and basically got told by her landlady that she had a month to move out because they wanted to sell the house with vacant possession. She ended up moving to the house next door, also managed by the same lettings agent. In the end it wasn't a total disaster - let's hope it irons out soon for you! Fingers crossed :x :x

Hmmm, this is a bad situation. I guess your lease was open ended - oh it probably doesn't much matter, most leases favor the owner.

Okay. so we can't save your apt, but let us know how MSCLers can help ease the pain. I've got a good backlog of rental horror stories in my life.

Thanks you guys. I ended up finding a place that's bigger than my current place (@ 725 sq ft), closer to school, and not a bad price either - only $80 more in rent than what I pay now. And it's the same leasing company, so I don't have to have a credit check or anything and they'll just transfer my deposit from this place to the new place. It's the one I mentioned in my earlier post. It's a beautiful little place, and having more space will be wonderful since I'm starting to run out of room at this little place! Anyway, the new apartment will be great, walking to school will be great. The only bad part is the actual hauling stuff, but hopefully if I can get enough help that won't be too bad. The last time I moved it was just me and my boyfriend (yes, that's only two people), and it only took us about an hour to load the u-haul, an hour to unload, and about an hour transit time total (to u-haul place, from u-haul place to apt, from old apt to new, returning u-haul, driving home). So it shouldn't be too bad. And I'm moving on the 15th, so yes that's in 11 days, but at least I don't have to move the weekend I have a concert or on my boyfriend's birthday (20th). It'll be all good.

I'm glad things worked out for you, Kristin. Having the deposit carry-over is a big plus.

I've been living in the same apartment complex for about six years. The rent has been increasing every year. But it is close to work, usually less than a half-an-hour's drive away. The complex has been sold. I was lucky in that my lease was up for renewal during the transition period. My rent went up about $30 a month. But I didn't have to move. There are many rumors and some disturbing facts about the new owner's intentions with the complex. It's a large corporate company, which has a reputation for sprucing up and selling places. From what I understand, it plans to increase my rent by $100 after it renovates the complex. There's no way that I'm going to pay almost $700 for an average one-bedroom apartment in Florida. So, come next July, I will probably be moving. The question arises whether I will stay in Tampa or move to Jacksonville in order to be closer to the rest of my family. But I can't move without lining up another job. We'll see what happens.

Between the ages of 19-23 I made sure all my worldly possessions could fit into the back of a citroen saxo for exactly that reason. Two trips? Out of the question. If it doesn't fit, it's not going. I still apply that rationale to travelling; two bags? You have to be joking. Put out what you *think* you need, and then remove half of it, and you'll still be fine.

Kristin, that's good news! Hope it all goes over smoothly and with the minimum of disruption. Good luck!

Update: I got a lead on a fellow student that has a 15-person van that I will probably be able to borrow. His roommate actually is a friend of mine, as it turns out. So hopefully that should work out (fingers crossed!). No u-haul! And also I'm going to try to get the move-in inspection on Friday afternoon instead of Saturday. That way I can clean the place and maybe move some of the smaller stuff or more fragile stuff before the big strong men show up to help me move the big furniture. Not that I have much. Only four things will not fit in my car: the couch, a bookcase, the top of my dining table (chairs and legs - no problem, though), and my bedframe. It just seems such a waste to get a u-haul for only those items. I think it should all work out fine, but I'm going out of my freakin' mind this week! And it's only Monday!

One of my friends had a truck and when he bought a new car he was adamant about buying a regular car instead of a truck or SUV because he was helping people move just about every weekend. He ended up getting another truck though.

I wish I could fit all my worldly belongings in my car at once, but I must confess that I'm a sentimental packrat. My books alone could fill a good portion of a U-Haul. I also have boxes full of pictures (you know, the ones that I keep meaning to put into a scrapbook). Luckily when we moved, we were able to fit all of our stuff (meaning my stuff and Mr. CG's) in one small rental truck. I brought the odds and ends up in my car.

My friend's philosophy is similar to starbug's though - she has moved across the country three times now, and every time she just packs up her car and drives from California to Florida (or vice versa). Whatever she can't fit in the car is either shipped, sold, or given away.

I'm on the two bags for a trip thing though. No matter how long I'm gone, I have one piece of carry on luggage (a roller bag that fits in the overhead compartment) and a backpack of extra stuff. When I went to a conference a few years ago with a bunch of people from work, five of us carpooled to the airport together. When we got to the parking lot, one of the guys started pulling all the luggage out of the trunk. He looked at my tiny suitcase and said, "What did you manage to fit in there? Five bathing suits?" Then he pulled out this HUGE piece of luggage that definitely had to be checked and said, "Who brought their entire wardrobe?" Heh, in my defense, we were going to Florida in April so I brought warm weather clothes which definitely take up a lot less room than sweaters and jeans (which I pack when I visit my parents at Christmas).

I keep meaning to buy new luggage but then I realize I only use it a few times each year so I put it at the bottom of my shopping list. Every once in a while I think I should buy some travel accessories because I feel like a ghetto kid when I unpack and my shampoo is in a big ziploc bag. Then again, I prefer packing my toiletries separately in ziploc bags. Instead of making room for a big case full of stuff, I squeeze my various bottles in between the clothes in my luggage and if anything leaks (which has happened, unfortunately) then I don't have a huge mess that has soaked everything.

Hey everyone!

So I moved into the new apartment yesterday. It was pretty easy - I had several guys to help me out! My boyfriend's dad even came down from Des Moines with his minivan to help, which was awesome. I haven't unpacked too many things yet, just the tv/stereo, dvds/cds, computer (obviously!), and couch. The important things, right?!! Today I spent all afternoon doing laundry, so now I can start setting up my bedroom (I slept on my couch in the living room last night). Anyway, I better get back to unpacking a little, although I'm sure I'll be unpacking all week (when I'm not in class)!
