What are lifers listening to these days?

Post by CheapWallpaper » Nov 29th 2001, 5:53 pm

Continuing from the below post I was wondering what sort of music Lifer's like, particularly as people generally seem to like the same TV shows.

(Obviously any references including the words 'Tom' or 'Buffalo' are disallowed!)

I guess I'll be the first to reply.

I'm probably not gonna mention many bands that people recognize, besides Billy Pilgrim of 'World Happiness Dance' fame. They're in the same category along with my Nick Drake CDs and CDs by an excellent young singer-songwriter named Kaytee Bodle.

But mostly I listen to Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, TransAtlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment, Symphony X, Chroma Key, Enchant, Neal Morse, Fates Warning, Lennon (not John Lennon, just plain Lennon, although I listen to him, too), Savatage, Galactic Cowboys and much, much more. there's also some heard-of stuff I listen to like Tori Amos, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Billy Joel, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Beatles, Collective Soul, Seal, Foo Fighters, Dishwalla, Sarah McLachlan, and more.

Sorry, I could never resist a music poll.

Actually, I have to say I didn't recognise any of the bands on dTheatre's obscure list, and I consider myself to be a major music fan ("Spock's Beard"? He's making that up, surely!). But then I'm in Liverpool and I possibly you are somewhere quite somewhere away!

Anyway, big faves on my boring list Beatles, Floyd, The Cure, Radiohead, Placebo, Tori, Nirvana etc. On the more obscure list we have (mostly british) Mogwai, Seafood, Ben Christophers (actually saw him supporting Tori last night), Asian Dub Foundation...

Oh, and Muse obviously. And NIN. And RATM. Stop me if you've heard this one before...

I'd have to say that I haven't heard of much of dtheater's choices either. I love Nick Drake though. so mellow and beautiful. my fav bands are the Beatles and Indigo Girls, but Dido is pretty great too. I just got a Coldplay album that I really like. most of the stuff I listen to right now is more laid back and all about the lyrics.

It's hard for me to pick any particular musicians as my faves since I am such a music lover but much of what I listen to today falls under the doom/gothic metal (Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Opeth, Amorphis, The Gathering, Avernus, Novembers Doom, Tiamat, Nightwish,Therion, Theatre of Tragedy, etc.), electronica/trance (particularly The Matrix soundtrack and the music featured in Hackers) and female vocalist genres (Sarah McLachlan, Loreena McKennitt, Enya, etc).

BTW, Brandon, I caught Kill Hannah when they and Kissenger opened up for Flickerstick at The Metro. Are you going to see KH next week when they return to the music mecca?

Awesome, a Sarah McLachlan/Gathering/Therion/Lacuna Coil fan! Yes, I have actually heard of all of these bands you mention, and not only have I heard of them, but I'm a big Gathering fan as well. Anneke has one of those heavenly voices that you so rarely hear, and Therion's "Vovin" is brilliant; "church metal" is a good description. I love orchestral and choir work, and this band really mixes and matches genres very well.

When I saw your handle, dTheater, I just knew you were going to be the one to post and say you recognized some of the bands on my list. <img src="/forum/images/smile.gif">

While I've never had the pleasure but seriously hope to check out Sarah McLachlan and Therion one day, I actually have seen The Gathering and Lacuna Coil live. Both experiences were some of the best concerts I've ever been to. I caught Anneke and the gang at Milwaukee Metalfest 2000, while I just saw Lacuna Coil on their tour with Moonspell when they swung through Chicago recently.

BTW, if you would like to talk off board about music, since we have so much in common on that score, feel free to e-mail me.

I'm kind of weird about music- besides a few rare exceptions (Bob Dylan, Paddy Casey, early REM), I can only listen to female singers. My favorites are Tori, Sarah, Fiona Apple, Lisa Loeb, Catie Curtis, Lisa Germano, Ani Difranco, Carole King, Indigo Girls, Portishead, Hole, and Etta James.

Cool thread,

I don't really have a particular music genre that I stay with.

I grew up with country music, speed metal and pop. There's a combination for you.

Nowadays there is not much that I won't give a try. I'm not much into speed metal anymore, might be showing some age there.

My all time favorite group is Queen. I discovered them in 1980 when I first heard "Another One Bites the Dust". My dad's second wife introduced to me to more and I was hooked. I stared to pick up their albulms whenever I could. Freddie Mercury had an incredible voice range.

I regret that I never saw them in concert, I heard that they put on quite a show.

Best,

Lance Man
