I love that album too, and I do have it with me . King of Carrot Flowers was the first Neutral Milk song that stuck in my head made me go out and buy the albums.

An emotional favorite for me is

Two Headed Boy is the song that got stuck in my head and made me buy the album. Great stuff!

One of my fav's is Dave Matthews Band - Dancing Nancies. It's a song about wondering who you are and how you came to be that way. This was one of my favorite songs in high school when I was often wondering who I was, and why. It's tough for me to pick only a few lines, almost all of them mean something. The best version is from live at Red Rocks and it contains the following intro:

Yeah, "Two-Headed Boy Part One" was the first song of theirs that I loved, too. "The King of Carrot Flowers Part One" doesn't hold a candle to the song "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," or "Naomi," or really a lot of the rest of their songs, but it has the easiest lyrical clump to distill into a forum such as this one.

I actually bought the album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea without hearing it first; I just took a friend's recommendation. Man, that was one of the best surprises ever.

Did you hear Jeff Magnum's acoustic record Live at Jittery Joes"? What did you think of it?

Of course I heard it. I'm OCD as hell and have to own everything with Mangum's name on it.

I think it's great. I love the extra little bit he tacks on to the end of "A Baby for Pree," and "Gardenhead," the aforementioned "Two-Headed By Part One," and "Naomi" all sound particularly good.

I have to admit that the first couple of times I heard it I was annoyed at the baby that keeps screaming, and when I watched the video on my computer (which is a really cool feature, by the way), I got mad that it kept wandering in front of the camera, but the more I listen to the CD now, the more endearing it is.

There are a couple of complete NMH concerts and Mangum solo concerts that can be downloaded from the web, and this CD sounds infinitely better than any of those (although some of the other, downloadable shows have really good rarities like "Rubby Bulbs," "Oh Sister," or "Little Birds" that are lacking from Live at Jittery Joe's; have you heard any of those?).

By the way, have you heard that Orange Twin (the label that LAJJ is on) is supposedly releasing a compilation of NMH rarities by the end of 2004? There has been rumors about it for years now, but Orange Twin recently announced it officially on its website, so it looks like it might just happen this time.

I heard about the Orange Twin release awhile back, but I don't think it was confirmed then, so this is good news. Hopefully we will get it soon. I was actually at the site not too long ago looking at the NMH tees they have, I might actually order one for someone's xmas gift this year.

Yeah, there's one or two on http://www.knerd.com/~sashwap, and they're the best ones I've heard. That's also where I got the "Rubby Bulbs" lyrics I listed above. They're the most comprehensive NMH site I've seen; way better than http://www.neutralmilkhotel.net.
