favorite holiday songs

Now that the insanity of the holiday season has descended upon us, what is your favorite song of the season? The one you can hear over and over at the mall while being shoved by crowds of people and still enjoy?

I love "Carol of the Bells," although I didn't fully appreciate it until we sang it in choir. I guess pounding it into my head for a month straight helped brainwash me into liking it. :D

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" because my sisters and I watch "Meet Me in St. Louis" every year when we're all home.

This is going to sound really cheesy, but I also like "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey because my sisters and I always sing that at the top of our lungs during the holidays.

Frosty the Snowman, because how can you not love Jimmy Durante and Frosty?

Not quite the same as Bing and Bowie, I know, but I still like it.

How about "Baby, it's cold outside."? I love that one. Plus, all the traditional ones, and "What are you doing New Year's Eve?" and "Let it Snow" because I love it when it does.

I love that Mariah song! Very catchy.

I also love:

O Holy Night (makes me cry)
So This is Christmas (War is Over)

I actually love all the traditional ones, I can't narrow them down. O Come all Ye Faithful, Away in a Manger, Silent Night, 12 Days of Christmas (and all the spin-offs), Jingle Bell Rock, I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.... want me to go on?

Shameless. I too enjoy Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

Other faves:

- Boney M - HELLO!!! "Mary's Boy Child" and "Feliz Navidad"
- "River" by Joni Mitchell, sung by the Holly Cole Trio
- "Carol of the Bells"
- "Christmastime is Here", cause it reminds of Charlie Brown

I know that no one actually buys CDs anymore due to kazaa and the like, but one of the best Christmas CDs is the Billboard Family Christmas -

1. Christmastime Is Here - Charlie Brown Christmas
2. Welcome Christmas - How the Grinch Stole Christmas
3. We Need a Little Christmas - Mama (Angela Lansbury)
4. Christmas Don't Be Late - Alvin & the Chipmunks
5. Riu Chiu - The Monkees
6. Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives
7. Coming Up Christmas Time - Hanna Barbera
8. White Christmas - Bing Crosby
9. Frosty the Snowman - Jimmy Durante
10. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Meet Me in St. Louis (Judy Garland)

I feel so much better that other people like that Mariah Carey song too!

Let's add Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) to the list - which version do you prefer: Darlene Love, U2, or Mariah Carey?

I like that song by the Ramones....Punk Rock Christmas is it? I got it off Napster I just can't remember the exact name. Trans-Siberian Orchestra also has some cool stuff. Run, Run Rudolph. (The original by Chuck Berry but the Brian Adams version is OK too.)

Ok this may be a weird question, but in the mid 80s there was a metal song that had lyrics similar to this:

"Theres no presents, not this christmas"

that might be the title too... any ideas?

U2. Def.

Jewel's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (sung with her mom) is worth mentioning just because it's so freaking bizarre. I'm a fan of Jewel's, and I'm STILL speechless.

And Elvis' "Blue Christmas" is a classic.

But my favorite Christmas recording is "Little Drummer Boy" by Bing Crosby and David Bowie.

In terms of actual SONGS, I like singing a lot of the hymns - "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Angels We Have Heard On High" - and some of the English carols like "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen."

But my favorite song is "I'll Be Home for Christmas." My first year at college (Auburn University), I discovered they played Christmas carols from Samford Hall's clock tower, and that song was, appropriately, the first carol I heard.

I also love that song from The Grinch, Where are you, Christmas? And Blue Christmas, both the Elvis and Porky Pig versions.

To me, the Greatest Christmas Record of all time is the soundtrack to Charlie Brown Christmas by the wonderful Vince Guarldi Trio. An absolute classic.

A song by the weird Bjork called 'Quiet' or something like that...

Technically, I don't think it's a Christmas song except in my head and its strange associations :)

Greensleeves has long been one of my favorites from any season. I'm not sure if it's origins are Christmassy or not, but I do seem to hear it a lot during "The Season". For some reason I also tend to play it in my head whenever I read the LOTR series. I guess it has that medieval fantasy epic feel to it.

And the Vince Guarldi Trio rock! :D

(Or perhaps they groove, yes, that sounds better.)
