the ultimate old school rap compilation

Post by Natasha (candygirl) » Oct 21st 2002, 7:17 pm

Inspired by what transpired in the "best cover song" thread (as well as the desert island music thread), let's come up with our own CD to rival those Rhino Record compilations.

We must have:

Baby Got Back - Sir Mixalot
Wild Thing - Tone Loc
Nuthin' but a G Thang - Snoop & Dre
Whoomp! There It Is - Tag Team
Humpty Dance - Digital Underground
Bust a Move - Young MC
Wiggle It - Two in a Room
Give It All You Got - Afro Rican
Shake It - MC Shy D
Iesha - ABC

I'm cracking up even as I type these!

Well, I was thinking more like people could add to the list and eventually we would have a comprehensive 30 disc set because believe me - I have plenty more songs percolating

My boyfriend will be so upset if he knew that I left the Biz off my original list. Thanks for adding it - I knew someone else would appreciate it!

'cause everything's to the back with a little slack,

Back to Life - Soul II Soul (does that count?)

and what's that song... Dub Be Good To Me, I think it was called and it had a rap in the middle going something like:
something something bang nitty gritty, listen to the sounds from the big bad city this is DAMN hot...

Sorry, that's not very helpful, is it?

:D

Sorry, candygirl, I know this song has nothing to do with your topic but I can't help myself so I'm going to ask.

Does anybody remember that song D.I.S.C.O? You know the one where they sing that bit that goes....

She is D delightful
She is I irresistable
She is S super Sexy
She is C such a cutie
She is O ooooh

Oh my God, I don't believe I just remembered that and actually admitted it! :o

Well just for that, I must get us back on topic with:

the S is for super
and the U is for unique
the P is for perfection
and you know that we are freaks!
the E is for exotic
and the R is for rap
so tell those nosy people
just to stay the hell back!

If the drugs havent completely destroyed my memory, that wouldve been Technotronic that did that.

But i might be wrong...

Fnordboy, Technotronic is indeed right so part of your brain is still there! ;)

As for old school rap, I can't believe no one mentioned "Fight for Your Right (to Party)" by the Beastie Boys. That was one song that I loved jamming to back in the day.

My major contribution would be "It Takes Two" by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock. Once voted by Spin magazine to be the top single of the last 25 years (c. 1989 or 1990).

In a slightly more serious vein, no Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five? "White Lines"? "The Message"?

Or, even for the crossover appeal, "Rapture" by Blondie?

Public Enemy -- "Don't Believe the Hype" or "Bring the Noise"?

Old Boogie Down Productions?

And who knows what I am forgetting -- I don't actually listen to that much rap/hip-hop.

STARBUG The song you wrote about is called 'Just be good to me' by a Britsh group (I think) called Beats International. I don't know if you wanted to know that, but Ijustlove :D that song so much I thought I'd let you know. And I also love 'Keep On Movin' by Soul 2 Soul. And some of my favourite old-skool hip hop tracks include:
Tribe called Quest-The Hop
Jungle bros, De la soul etc- How ya want it we got it OH YEAH!
DeLASOUL- Rollerskating Jam Named Saturdays
Delasoul-Bitties in the BK lounge
Nas- Life's a Bitch
Anything by Digable Planets
Anything by Biggie (I think he might be my favourite)
and there's just too many to mention so I think I'll stop now! :D
