v. good thread. A few off the top of my head:
  • Mrs Robinson - The Lemonheads
Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Where is My Mind - Nada Surf
    Helter Skelter - U2
    Wild Horses - The Sundays
In Heaven - The Pixies (From the film Eraserhead)
    Ms Jackson - The Vines
Nobody Does it Better - Radiohead
Hang on to your Ego - Black Francis

And of course the best of all covers I WANNA BE SEDATED by our very own Frozen Embryos.

Will prob think of loads more as soon as i send this so ill be adding them all night lol.

I think my favorite cover is William Shatner's version of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds from his Transformed Man CD.

I recently saw "Sweet Home Alabama" starring Reese Witherspoon and now I can't get Jewel's cover version of that Lynard Skynard song out of my head (and my mp3-player ;-)). Hrmpf...

Miles Davis - "Time After Time" (by Cyndi Lauper)

I know this isn't something that could be called typical cover, but it is really amazing. The version on his studio album "You're Under Arrest" is nothing special, but a live 9+ minutes version on live album "Live Around the World" is definitely the most beautiful and most emotional performance of any piece of music I ever heard. It is so beautiful that when someone mentions the song the first thing that comes to my mind is Miles' name, not that of Cyndi Lauper.

I also like Roxy Music covering "Jealous Guy" by John Lennon. I think this cover is much better than original.

My vote is for Pearl Jam - Patriot
It's short, sweet, and "it makes you feel, it wakes you up" :)

I have a few more very good covers:

Cake - I will Survive (funky and fun)

Jimmy Hendrix - All along the watchtower (no one will ever top Jimmy on this one)

Joe Crocker's cover of Ringo's - Little help from my friends (how it should have been done all along, by the way, GO WONDER YEARS!)

Train's cover of Zepplin's - Ramble On (This version is so solid, would do Robert Plant proud)

John Lennon said that of all the Beatles songs ever covered, this was his favorite version. Not that Joe Cocker needed any validation, but damn that's quite a compliment!

just a few cause I can't think of any other's right now:

Everything But The Girl-Back to the Old House (orig. The Smiths)

Erasure- Solsbury Hill 37B Mix (orig. Peter Gabriel(don't laugh at that it's a good dance track!))

Smashing Pumpkins - Destination Unknown (orig. Missing Persons)

Fudge- Psycho Killer (orig. Talking Heads)

Yeah that'll do until I think of more.

The Sundays' "Wild Horses" is so beautiful. It's one of my all time favourite songs, and a real tear jerker. Harriet Wheeler's voice is so lovely and unique. :Fade-color
