Dark Angel Season 1 DVD, anyone else?

MSCL may be gone from the tv screen, but there are lots of good (and bad) new productions airing each week. Talk with other MSCL fans about your favorite shows or the shows you hate. Of course you can also discuss TV show DVD releases here.

Dark Angel Season 1 DVD, anyone else?

Post by fnordboy » May 27th 2003, 2:28 pm

Well I picked these up last week when they were released. I had seen a few episodes when it originally aired and liked it for the most part. Never got hooked though. I figured I would give it a shot again on DVD, and so far I am enjoying it.

Anyone else pick these up?

I never got hooked either, but my boss raved about the show. Something to do with Jessica Alba being really REALLY hot.

Well I can't deny that this was a deciding factor in my purchase :)

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

I haven't watched that many ep's of Dark Angel. I never really got that into it. This is totally not a knock against Dark Angel of Buffy, but I am truly baffled that those two shows can be hits and command such a large following and WitchBlade got canned after two seasons. Maybe I am way out of touch (apparently) but I never found Buffy and D.A. to be in the same league w/ Witchblade. I also thought Yancy Butler was way hotter than Sarah M.G. or Jessica A. Anybody else watch Witchblade? Thoughts?

Well I can tell you that I personally did not watch Buffy because I found SMG to be hot. She's not fugly, but she is not on my fantasy list. I watched Buffy because somehow along the way, I became emotionally attached to the characters, even the ones I didn't like (Buffy).

If I had to pick one of the three (SMG, Yancy, or Jessica), I would go with Jessica because she has that exotic vibe. Honestly though, I think their appeal is that they are ass-kicking women which makes them attractive.

Definitely Jessica. SMG is maFugly IMO, well there are maybe a few scenes in the first season or two where she is lit perfectly and who ever did her makeup was being nice to her. But 9.99 times out of 10 she is butt.

I tried getting into WitchBlade but just could not. I didnt like the lead girl at all and what i saw of it was pretty cheesy, but not a good cheese.

Which brings me to the Dark Angel phenomena, atleast for me. Like I said before I couldnt really get into the show at first when it aired. And I really wanted to, mainly for Ms. Alba, but it just wasn't happening. Now that I am watching it on DVD I am really enjoying the show. It is quite cheesy, the acting and writing is definitely subpar at times.

But really, how can you not love a series with episode titles like: 411 on the DL or Kidz are Aiight. I mean that is just so cheesy it makes it awesome.

What Candygirl said it true with Buffy. I just recently in the last couple months got into Buffy and you do really start to care for the characters. I don't know if it is as much as like in MSCL, but it is close. And the writing on that show (dialogue wise) is pretty damn witty and intelligent, even if they are speaking like morons most of the time. There is a method to that madness.

For me the difference is that I identified with Angela a lot, which gave me an emotional connection to her. I recognized her obsessive Jordan silliness as something I have done.

I do not see much of myself in Buffy, but the show manages to portray her as a normal girl who happens to fight vampires/demons/apocalypses - she is still a girl who doesn't study for tests, wants to hang out with her friends, argues with her mom, and is ultimately trying to figure out who she is and where her place in the world is. Even when I grew to really dislike Buffy as a character, I never wanted her to lose because, with few exceptions, she did not shirk the responsibility that was thrust upon her. Lastly, the show did an excellent job portraying the everchanging relationships among friends. Instead of having them retain the exact same dynamics from day one, they all grew and consequently their relationships changed. Unlike other shows where the writers use events (like getting married or having kids) to illustrate maturity, we have watched the characters on BtVS change gradually and grow into their present selves, thorns and all.

SMG-nice butt, what's up with her nose?(Allyson is yummy though)

Jessica's hot but she's got that "Look at me,I'm so sexy" vibe which just isn't working for me and the "ass-kicking"factor isn't helping much.

Yancy whatever
