If I remember correctly a few people on here are fans of this show, here is some news. I don't know the show at all, and got this off of dvdtalk.com so you might want to double check the info before totally accepting it:

from the sci fi channel website-

Nathan Fillion, star of Fox's defunct SF western series Firefly, told SCI FI Wire that the show could rise again, both as a movie and as a DVD set. "Right now, our hopes and dreams are pinned on a Firefly movie, which TV can't cancel us out of," Fillion said in an interview at the May 18 Saturn Awards, where he was honored with Cinescape's Face of the Future Award. "We're talking silver screen, wide release, big old deal. So everything's looking very positive, so we're going to keep our fingers crossed."

Series creator Joss Whedon would write and direct the movie, Fillion added.

Meanwhile, Fillion—who played Capt. Mal Reynolds—said that he is completing audio commentaries for a complete DVD set of the Fox series' 15 produced episodes, including three that never aired. "I just finished commentary with Alan Tudyk [Wash] on 'War Stories,' an episode where he and I got tortured. ... And then, Monday, I go in to do audio commentary with Joss Whedon for 'Serenity,' the two-hour pilot."

The DVD will also include on-camera interviews and maybe even some of Fillion's own behind-the-scenes home video and photos. As for the unaired episodes, Fillion said, "My naked ass is in them. In the very last episode. I'll let you know that much. They called me Capt. Tight Pants for some time. And now it's going to be Capt. No Pants for sure." Fillion did not know when the DVD set would come out.

Joss was quoted in the New York Times (for as much as anyone can be quoted by the NYT) as saying that he was trying to get the rest of the Firefly story to the fans be that with "a tv show, movie or a T-shirt".

I think candy girl posted a link to the interview in the Buffy thread.

In addition to the recent announcement of the Firefly release date, Joss is one baby step closer to making the Firefly movie a reality - news from SciFi Wire
Joss Whedon, creator of Fox's canceled SF western series Firefly, told SCI FI Wire that he is close to a deal to write and direct a feature film based on the short-lived show. "What's happening with that is that I'm writing a script," Whedon said in an interview. "And I have some interest. But I won't know really until I finish a draft whether or not it's genuine. ... We have a pretty decent shot. It's not a crazed pipe dream."

Whedon said that any deal for a Firefly movie would be contingent on getting the original cast back as the crew of the space transport ship Serenity. "Well, I can't just keep putting them on [The WB's] Angel," he joked. "So I have to make a Firefly movie so I can hang out with them more. Yes, the deal is contingent upon the cast." Firefly starred Nathan Fillion as Capt. Mal Reynolds. Whedon added, "I couldn't go so far as to jinx [the deal] and say it's in the bag. It's not. I still have to write it really well [groans]. But there's no pressure."

In the meantime, Whedon said that the upcoming DVD of Firefly will include three unaired episodes, plus "the gag reel, interviews with everybody, commentaries on most of the episodes by cast members and writers and directors and me. ... It's a huge package. It's b-lls-out deluxe, which I'm really proud of."

From the 7/10 edition of the Digital Bits' "My Two Cents" column;
We've got some new Fox TV street dates for you today. Look for Dark Angel: Season 2 on October 21st, The X-Files: Season 8 on November 4, King of the Hill: Season 2 on November 11 and M.A.S.H: Season Five, Fnordboy: The Complete Series and Buffy: Season 5 all on December 9th.
I don't know about you, but I'm psyched that it's coming. This show deserved the chance to grow, but that's an 80's network mindset (totally last millenium dude)...
