Katie,

"Meatballs" is a great movie! I think it's Bill Murray's first film actually. It came
out in 1979 and I saw it at the theater probably six times that summer (yeah,
remember, I'm older than dirt). Now I need to caution you that it probably really
doesn't reflect camp life, in fact you might find it a little offensive. So, of
course you need to run out and rent it and let us know. Hmmm...Mia commented
that this movie made her want to become a counselor. That being said,
I can't help but think of the song the counselors and CITs sang near the
end of the film as they sat around the campfire. And for those readers not
familiar with the song, I will now (like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat)
reach back into the vast storage of useless information that resides in my old
brain and "sing" to you that song. [Sound of throat clearing]:

"We're CITs, so pity us,
The kids are brats, the food is hideous!
We're gonna smoke and drink and fool around - we're nookie bound!
We're Northstar CITs!"

There you go, that should set the tone of the film for you. Now that doesn't sound
like your experience at all and I'm sure it's not a reflection of reality, but
nonetheless the film is pretty darned funny. So, if the above ditty didn't offend
you (and I hope it didn't - you know me I'm just looking for a laugh) you should
run out and rent it. Anyways, it's late so I gotta go. Talk to you later.

Whoa... amazing that I've never previously noticed this! I agree with posters who do not believe this is a coincidence. Is 8 a lucky number for the writers? Hmm...

It's when Graham is talking about seeing the Grateful Dead when he was 15 and he claims "it was one of the eight best nights of my life". I just thought this was a strange thing to say cos usually people would say "One of the ten best nights.." or "One of the five best nights..". Eight seems a weird number to use in that context.

Weird... Graham's statement always stuck out to me, too. It seems as if he's actually ranked the days of his life, attempting to make a Top 10, but only came out with 8. I never paid attention to the other references, though.

I think I read somewhere on these forums that there was a mention on the pilot commentary that the number 8 on Devon Gummersall's jersey in the pilot was a reference to It's a Wonderful Life, though not sure from where in the film. So maybe it has to do with that?

Actually, the "Wonderful Life" reference is the number 3 (and the entire scene where Angela changes her clothes behind the bushes). There's a scene in "It's a Wonderful Life" where the young George offers Mary to "lasso the moon" and wears a shirt with the number 3.

Oh, okay, sorry. I think I read that in the discussion of the Shout! Factory release. Anyway, I guess the number 8 really must be an inside joke then between the writers since I can't think of any other things it could point to.

Did anyone notice that the outfit that Brian wore in the Pilot(with the # 3) was also the outfit that Rickie wore in the Halloween episode?!

This popped into my head, but I think it's a stretch...was Winnie's daughter 8 years old? She appeared in Other People's Mothers as one of the kids at Patty's parent's anniversary party, and looked to me like she could have been 8.
