High school was crazy for me. 8 45 minute periods with 5 minutes in between (7:30-1:55). Then, if you stayed after school, which was almost everyday for me (musical, drama show, jazz choir, etc. If it involved music I did it.), activities could not start until 2:45. It was Tutoring period or something like that. If you were an honors student or someone who didn't need that time, you sat around and did nothing. It got to be cool when we were seniors and drove b/c we would make a fast food run for everyone, but I just remember that 50 mins as the most irritating part of high school. It kept me after to at least 4, sometimes 5 or 5:45. I usually had work or some other music activity after that. I still don't know how I did it. I'm in college now. I do not have the same stamina or energy that I did then.

I hated gym class. I sucked at almost all sports. I was a quasi-intellectual/too cool for sports type of guy. My small group of friends and I basically faked our way through gym classes letting all know our disdain. I think I made all Cs in gym. As far as I can remember, the gym teachers kept time and let us start going to the locker rooms a few minutes before the end of gym classes.

I'm pretty each class lasted 45 or 55 minutes with 5 minutes between each class. We had 6 periods, homeroom, and a 45 minutes lunch period. I wasn't involved in too many extra-curricular activities. I only vaguely remember yearbook, student council, and scholar bowl.

I didn't remotely enjoy high school until after my senior year started. That's when I put on some weight, started looking decent, and got cooler glasses and a better haircut. Girls didn't pay any attention to me until then.

When I think back to high school, I feel so sorry for my mom, friends, and boyfriend who all spent a lot of time shuttling me (and my sister) back and forth to school all the time. My sister was two years behind me in school so we were at the high school together for two years. Between us, we were in two choir groups, dance team, drama, ASB, yearbook, cheerleading, gymnastics, and track. Even the extracurriculars that were given a period during the day (choir, dance, yearbook) still required a lot of after school time (or before school, ugh, as I mentioned earlier). Our dance coach often called 0 period practice, lunch practice, after school practice, and weekend practice the weeks that we performed at home games, as well as during competition season. Same thing with cheer. Weekly choir rehearsal outside of class was 6-9pm. Drama required a lot of after school and weekend work, especially the musicals. Gymnastics and track had practice every day after school. Then there were all of the conferences/competitions/meets/performances after school and on the weekends. As if that wasn't enough, our choir decided that we loved performing SO much that we usually had some kind of thing every weekend - malls, restaurants, retirement homes, you name it, we sang there.

I didn't have a car, so that meant I had to rely on other people to get me to and from school. A typical day was my mom or friend driving me to school, my friend or boyfriend driving me home after practice for dinner, then someone else taking me back to school for evening rehearsal, then my boyfriend or mom taking me home again. (the school bus would only get me to school by 1st period, which didn't work when we had morning rehearsal, and there was a regular after school bus and one later bus but I was usually still stuck at school until after the last bus)

Luckily when my youngest sister was in high school, my mom was down to driving only one kid around. I think it was a relief when my sister got her license and they gladly let her drive herself to school in my dad's old car. :D

I had a car through high school after I got my license. It was pretty cool, I gave my friends lots of rides. I really needed the car though, because I lived on the downtown East side of Madison and my two guitar lessons (classical and jazz), my piano lessons, and my job were all on the West side. I also had another job singing in a band, and we played all over the city and elsewhere so I needed the car to get to gigs too. My younger brother has been driving that car for the past year and a half, and last week he hit a deer with it and it killed the car. Ouch! Too bad. That car treated us pretty well. I've been here in college without a car for the past two years, and it really sucks. Kansas City is hard to get around without a car.

As for the class before school actually starts, the only thing that I had like that was jazz band rehearsal. We only had one teacher for the 3 bands and music theory class, so when it came to jazz band he was strapped for time. Jazz band met at 7am on Tuesdays before 1st period at 8:15am.

Tell me about it. Same here. But for me, three is the minimum number of classes a day. Five is my max this semester. All music except for one art class - drawing.

I've found my problem is college hasn't been the length of the day (# of classes or amount of time) it has been how many days a week I have classes. Im on my fourth semester (end of second year) and I've had at least one weekday off every semester, except for the first semester. (this semester I only have class Tuesday thru Thursday)
However, it could also be because I can't do much about how many hours a day it is. I'm an art student and our studio classes are 3 hours long twice a week.. and I need to have about 2 studios a semester, sometimes more. So I have had to schedule (in one day) a 75 minute class, 3 hour studio, hour or so for lunch, then another 3 hour class... making me start at like 8:30 and end at about 5 (this would be repeated twice a week- tues and thurs).
However.. having a hard day is ok when I have a four day week. Plus- I love having the freedom to pick the classes and the schedules and the times.
Sorry to go on so long..

Ugh, one semester I was working a lot, so I had ALL of my classes on Tuesday/Thursday from 9-6 with NO BREAK. It was hell.

Of course, it earned me some good scheduling karma - my last quarter before graduation, my first class was at 11am and I only had one class on Fridays!

Even my finals schedule was awesome - most of my classes assigned papers/take home finals so my only in class final was on the first day of finals week. Granted it sucked to study all weekend, but after that I was competely done. My other friend had a similar situation so we spent all week hanging out together, running into our stressed out friends who cursed us when we told them we were totally done. In return, we mocked them.

:D

I've had the same situation with exams as you've had candygirl. Most of my exams have been teachers critiques (for art classes) or papers. Maybe one or two exams, and sometimes they schedule them on the last day of class instead of exam week... My older sister (who is now 28) curses me because her college was strict about exams, when mine is pretty lax. (we don't even need mid-terms.. we have fifth week evaluations... teachers just need to have some grades so they can give out warnings, if needed)
Sorry to get off topic though :(

Well to be fair, not all of my classes (or school terms) were that awesome - it just worked out well my last quarter. I usually had papers, midterms, finals - all the normal stuff that college kids complain about  One quarter my first final was 8am on Monday morning. It was raining and I was stuck in traffic about 20 miles away. My professor decided that the exam would only last one hour and despite the fact that our assigned final (as determined by the university) was 8-11am, he said that our exam was 8-9am. A bunch of people showed up late because of all the rain, so he gave us ten whole more minutes for the exam. I didn't get to class until 8:30 (I had to park all the way across campus and take the shuttle, then walk half way across campus) so I got a whopping 40 minutes for a final that consisted entirely of essay questions. Most of my blue book was bordering on doctor's prescription illegible due to my extreme haste!

I'm sorry if this is off topic (well, the discussion has turned this direction) but I just have to say it. In exactly one month, I will be finished with this semester and half of my first degree. Yay!

I have a pretty busy schedule this semester, and it's not going to get any better in the coming semesters. I have class every day until at least 3pm (latest 5pm) and starting at either 9am or 10am. Then I usually have to practice my instrument (not compare them  ) for at least two hours before tackling the homework. That's the life of the music student, though. We spend countless hours of our lives in a little windowless room with a piece of metal or wood. Boy, when you look at it that way, it sounds a little pathetic, doesn't it?

Enjoy it while you can Kristin - school is WAY more fun than the real world.

My boyfriend and I were just reminiscing about all the crazy stuff we did with our friends in college. Meeeeeemories...

I believe you, candygirl. I'll be in school for quite a bit longer though. You almost can't do anything in music composition without a doctorate. So I have at least five more years after this one to look forward to. I'm just happy this semester is almost over because it's been particularily stressful. Moreso than previous semesters. I wonder why?

sab wrote:No, she did go in front of that girl to NOT to be paired with Rayanne. At the beginning, Angela and Rayanne are the last ones in their rows - but Angela doesn't want to get in touch with Rayanne, so she cuts in front of that other girl. But when they are in front of the vault, the girl opposite Angela (in front of Rayanne) steps out of the line to tie her shoelace. Result: Angela and Rayanne are paired once again. I haven't seen this episode for some time, so I don't know whether it can be seen that Angela really does the vault (with Rayanne helping her) - but it might be interesting that it was planned to do so when Jill Gordon wrote the episode.<p>
That scene always reminds me of "The Wonder Years" - don't know why.

Sascha.

The Gym scene has played over in my mind throughout the years as it never made any sense to me. The idea of going ahead in line in gym class seems crazy to me but under the circumstances, even worse. Anyway, SAB's explanation didn't sit right with me becasue I was pretty sure the girl who ties up her shoe stepped out of line before angela cut ahead, suggesting that she was trying to be paired with Rayanne. I just watched that section of the show to be sure. Here's what happens: the girl steps out to tie up her shoelace, Rayanne looks down then over at Angela's line, Angela looks over at Rayanne's line and then asks the girl in front of her if she can cut ahead. So this scene still doesn't make sense to me anyone have any explanation?

I agree with SAB that this scene is reminiscent of "The Wonder Years" but also can't put my finger on what it is exactly.
