Is he famous in the USA? What do people think of him?

I ask because he is currently hung in a perspex box 25ft above my lovely city... he will be there for 44 days in all without food, a toilet etc... people have been pelting him with eggs and stuff but my favourite was a guy who took a 4-iron up there and started hitting golf-balls at him...

I'm not sure if he really thought about the fact that the British aren't particularly behind him on this one... I mean, what is the point of it? to push human endurance? He strikes me as a master exhibitionist who's only interested in making people think he's strange (he's succeeded) and intriguing (I don't think so). Plus he's clearly grasping for fame and notoriety.

I just don't get it. There are other, far more useful ways he could test his own endurance if he feels the need. He could try filling out mortgage application forms for all citizens who wanted it, for example...

He is fairly famous here, but most people don't take him too serious. I don't know how I feel about him. On one hand he is a pretty good magician and has a lot more of an interesting style then the flashy bedazzler-esque look of the Copperfield variety, but on the other hand his tricks are not really that new. And now he is doing just publicity stunts like the box one he is doing now.

I do enjoy his TV specials when they are on, but I don't go out of my way for them.

I think it is awesome that people are throwing s**t at him

Well, Copperfield loses on the 'hair' factor alone...

Blaine may have slight of hand, but he has zero charisma or personality and seems content to be viewed as 'that weirdo'. I used to watch his shows a bit but lately it seems he has fallen off the sanity wagon.

My favorite thing is that Blaine is obviously tweaked (or at the very least wants people to view him that way) and he has said that Fiona Apple was just too crazy to deal with in the past. So she must be absolutely insane

I agree, Fiona Apple is pretty out there, i went to find some sort of colourful story on the net but instead I found depressing reality. So now where I just wanted to light heartedly make fun of a crazy celeb I instead am side tracked by empathy. Hopefully she gets some help if she hasn't already.
As for David Blaine, I don't know much about him. Copperfield has driven me away from the genre of tv magician. i agree with starbug that he's "clearly grasping for fame and notoriety". A lot of celebs are doing just that but for some reason it does bother me more when it's him. I loved the "South Park" episode with the Blaine-tologists and the "super best friends" maybe that's part of why i find him so creepy.

I don't like David Blaine, but when I read about people in London throwing eggs at him, I felt a little bad for him. Not a lot, just a little.
