BMG release of DVD on 10/8

Post by Ken Shaw » Sep 12th 2002, 11:10 pm

Well, I think there is something there we didn't know before and that is that something many of us paid $115 in advance for is now going to go for $100 retail (ie, less at some retailers). And many of us have been charged multiple times and are having trouble getting our money back.

You will note that the BMG press release has the box set listed as an exclusive to AU. I also ask you to check my prediction from April:

Another distributor started soliciting this set to vendors even though they don't have a deal for the set. This is unethical.

Seems the problem of unethical-ness is making its rounds concerning this set. First we have a company charging multiple times for it. Now we have companies charging for it that don't even have it.

Makes me real safe to be a consumer in this society.

. First we have a company charging multiple times for it.
Nope; wrong. The *FIRST* round of unethicalness was when many of the folks who preordered the set had their e-mail addresses intercepted from the confirmations in transit to them, and those addresses were added to a list of spam recipients.

The item being solicited to us? Kiddie porn!!

I never DID hear back from the FBI after filing that report...

David, I had addressed this much earlier on another forum.

It is a fact that many spammers randomly generate email addresses, even for something that doesn't seem like a "guess." Especially if it was with a common, free email service.

The problem with the spams never found its way off the home theater forum. In fact, it was never even mentioned on this forum, or in an email from a member of this forum. And believe me, when there is a problem with people from this forum, I hear about it. In spades.

I would have to conclude that the problem was either not widespread, or not from AU. With all of the real problems legitimately posted here, I don't think this necessarily fits.

Jason

PS: It is my understanding that this was reported to authorities. I don't know if the FBI, etc. are supposed to tell you what they find.

Dude! I've never been spammed with kiddie porn. Gah! I think you just got horribly unlucky with that one, David Lambert. I don't think I've been spammed as a result of ordering this set, although it's possible... there's so much spam... but I haven't noticed a particular increase in the amount I get since ordering.

In addition to the FBI, although you probably already know this, you can also report spam (even the everyday kind) by using this form at the Federal Trade Commission, or by forwarding the spam directly to this address: uce@ftc.gov. I should say, though, that I haven't a clue what the FTC does with this information--I've never heard back. If your e-mail is through work or school, you might want to drop a line mentioning the situation to your system administrator as well, particularly when there's potentially criminal activity involved.
