Re: Books inspired by MSCL

Oh hee, I forgot about that! I remember a lot in Freaks and Geeks, too, although I'm blanking on specifics.

Books inspired by MSCL

Hi all, I've recently started Underage Reading, a blog about children's and young adult lit, with my longtime best friend and fellow MSCL-lover Emily. And today, inspired by Judy Blundell's What I Saw and How I Lied , we started a new series, "Shades of MSCL." Basically we're chronicling the obvious...

Re: Once and Again DVD release

Oh, wow. I haven't bought ANY of the seasons yet but was planning to ask my parents as my Xmas present (I already bought myself the MSCL DVDs... both editions, as they were released). If they did a package deal on all three seasons of O&A, I'd be thrilled.

Re: New book of essays on MSCL!

Anyone else reading this? I ordered it, but it hasn't come yet -- Christmas break reading, I suppose. I'd be curious to hear everyone else's thoughts. (I did just read an old article by Michele Byers on MSCL that gave me some pause about the book -- it was VERY academic and I wished there was more t...

MSCL review in Socialist Worker

Here's a review of MSCL I wrote for Socialist Worker (U.S.) newspaper:

Comments welcome on the analysis! I always love talking about the show.

Re: NBC officially picks up "quarterlife" - airdate: spring 2008

I have to say, I don't buy Herskovitz's argument here AT ALL. In any strike, scabs start being offered better deals -- things they would never be offered outside of the context of other workers refusing to work and the company being desperate to hire someone, to keep production going, and to break t...

Re: NBC officially picks up "quarterlife" - airdate: spring 2008

So in other words, Herzkowitz and Zwick are now officially scabs. They'll rail on the networks for not supporting writers or giving them enough creative control, but then they sign a deal for themselves at precisely the moment when it undermines other writers -- who, on the whole, are displaying imm...

Add another for New York. I received mine in mid-November, I believe. (Is there a thread for discussing the bonus disk? Sorry to further sadden those who haven't received theirs yet--Another Universe is so evil--but I was interested in some of the things I learned from Winnie in the interview.)

_MackTuesday_, thanks, that was helpful. Re: the "there is no small talk." I've read this many times, and I agree in theory. But then I watch actual MSCL episodes and I'm struck by how much it seems like we're watching my actual friends and family interact, and I think, how do I do that solely with ...

a genre show?

Something I've been mulling over while writing my first fan fic: Is MSCL a straight drama, or a genre show? How much does it conform to or actively subvert elements of genres like the teen drama?

Avoiding "Look, I've seen the show!" Syndrome

One problem I've encountered in writing my first fan fic is distinguishing between actual continuity that develops organically out of my scene and things I'm tempted to put in just because they refer back to something in an actual episode. I want my fan fic to be something that could pass for an act...

As for the most unlikely pairing ever, I'm not sure where you're going with that. I've seen some pretty unlikely pairings in fanfics and they have worked. If Brian is involved, I think a strong case could be made for him to be involved with any of the girls; even Danielle, but that would have to be...

lifelike , I could totally fanwank that the girl's not really an Angel, Patty's hallucinating, whatever, were it not for that damn wing scene at the end. It's not from any character's perspective, so I can only think of it as the objective truth. And that's why, as much as I love love love a great ...

Devon Gummersall in Felicity

I just rewatched Devon Gummersall's 5 episodes from the first season of Felicity. I hadn't seen them since the original airing. What creeps me out about it is that in some ways, Zack really seems like a sort of plausible college-age Brian to me. But then I have all this cognitive dissonance over the...

I am amazed (every time I think of it) that a book like MSCL...Goes On was ever published. The 'ship Catherine Clark devised is like the textbook example of bad fan fic. Not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it...but if you think of just about the unlikeliest character pairing imaginable, you g...
