Re: Claire Danes in Homeland

I procured and watched the first three episodes. The amoral glorification of CIA operatives, and of how Claire's character brazenly trashed the Bill of Rights at every turn, finally became too repellent for me. I also fear that Claire is still relying on acting tics, such as the constant swearing, t...

Re: Zwick/Herskovitz: "Confessions of a Contractor" for FOX

"[...] a script with a penalty attached"? Anyone know what that means? The producers and writers have a deadline, or they won't be paid? Fox will film the pilot, or they pay extra? A lot of this jargon needs translation. Citing their past projects doesn't mean this new project will combine them. Tha...

Re: Claire Danes returns to TV for "Homeland"

On the one hand: I detest the whole premise of this series, given that it's extremely unlikely to question why the U.S. government is intervening in these countries and is slaughtering people wholesale. The previews seem to be at least half-glorifying the military and the CIA, and I get enough of th...

Re: Jason Katims talks about his work for MSCL

"There were only eighteen episodes of that show [nineteen, actually] and the next show I did was Relativity , which I created." Why, why , WHY isn't Relativity on DVD by now? Not the same fan community (compared to MSCL , there never could be), but it was astoundingly good storytelling! My over-the-...

Re: Afraid to watch the last episode!

Don't be afraid to watch the last episode. It brings many threads of the series together, as Winnie Holzman planned, given that the creators were quite sure by then that it wouldn't be renewed as a series. You will feel satisfied in how Rickie, Jordan, Rayanne, Sharon, Patty, Graham, Hallie, and oth...

Re: There's Something About Hallie

I like Hallie so much that I even rented one of Lisa Waltz's few film appearances, in a low-budget romance / fantasy / drama called " Starry Night ." The title alludes to Van Gogh's famous painting of the same name, with his being reincarnated in modern Los Angeles. The film wasn't art for the ages,...

Re: Daria on DVD!

It's already listed for $73 as pre-order at Amazon.com. It recently dropped back to $46.99 for pre-order, $4 less than it had been listed for initially. With how Amazon has been constantly fiddling on its DVD prices, though, I'd recommend looking for other outlets, and not pre-ordering. The set is ...

Same sound anomaly on re-release

I just discovered this past weekend that the Shout Factory DVD re-release has the same minor sound anomaly as the previous BMG DVD set. The Dolby Surround track on "Other People's Mothers" is slightly out of synch with the video, by about a quarter-second. The stereo two-channel track works perfectl...

Synopsis used to publicize Hulu-casts

I've been using the following summary and commentary elsewhere on the Net to introduce "MSCL" to those who hadn't heard of it, and who might be inclined to sample it on Hulu. If you want to reuse any of my descriptions yourself, be my guest. ~ SR Hulu has just added a rich tapestry from '90s televi...

Re: Complete MSCL Episodes Now On Hulu

Rousing applause to Hulu for getting this on line! Hulu's presentation has distinctly improved from the last time I sampled a series at that site ... but that's probably due to my having, in the interim, doubled our broadband Net speed. You will need at least 2 mbps to see it without frequent pauses...

Re: EW's 25 Biggest Emmy Snubs

From the EW article: "[...] Although I may never forgive Claire Danes (she admitted to EW in 2004 that she had a hand in the show not returning for a second season) [...]" Nothing to forgive her for. Never was. She (and her parents and agent) may indeed have been utterly frustrated at the constant d...

Re: Daria on DVD!

Long overdue, of course, and quite welcome. If you've never before encountered Daria Morgendorffer's brand of sardonic-to-cynical wisdom, and the hilarity from the high-school stereotypes wickedly satirized around her, you're in for a treat. The DVD set probably won't have all, or even more than a f...

Packaging queries

~ The one weakness of the 2007 edition's packaging is that the clear-plastic mountings for the six discs are quite fragile. I've had one of them break on me already, which means that Disc 2 keeps wanting to fall out of the inner container when I open it. Anyone else have this problem? Unfortunately,...

Number 44 of all time ... pretty damn good

From "TV's Top 100 [Series] Episodes of All Time" — quoth the editors of "TV Guide" (in the US), the June 15-28 issue, saying, "You helped us pick them, we ranked them": "44. 'My So-Called Life' 'Self-Esteem,' 11/17/1994 Like you didn't totally swoon over Jared Leto." Well ... not JUST over Jared Le...

Apparently only about three weeks, because Amazon.com now lists the set at its maker's suggested retail price of $69.99. It appears that Shout! Factory no longer is offering volume discounts to such larger retailers. Many far less expensive copies, though, remain available, " used and new ," in Amaz...
